Trying to get some corn and peas/barley forage mix in the silo. Of course that means repairs. The first is the sickle drive arm from the corn chopper. This is an old Case that is part of my collection that got put to use this year because we are mixing the peas/barley with corn, so the main chopper is set up with the hay head. Anyway, the repairs. As you can see the arm has what looks like several "farmer" repairs. That weld is huge, but only a little was holding. Reply:Try the pics again. Tapatalk updated and I'm having trouble figuring how to post pics again. Attached ImagesYeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Cleaned up half the oldweld leaving the top half the original arm. That has to be timed correctly so I left the top to make sure its right. Since it broke it won't provide much strength anyway and I just didn't feel like grinding all that crap off. Reply:Then some welding, ran 2 passes with mig then added a couple gussets welded on both sides. Held good for the 35 loads so far, bout 10 or 15 more to go. Reply:Next project was a broken frame on one of the silage boxes. This is a typical break for this brand box, I've fixed a number of them including both the one's we had on the farm when I was a kid. Reply:Railroad Jack works good for lifting things like this especially loaded as this one was, couldn't unload it because the apren was catching. Just jacked it into place, cleaned it up and welded both sides. The frame is only 10ga so it didn't take much welding. Did run a double pass down on one side because my first weld had some porosity and needed to be ground out and redone part way. Was really having a hard time getting good welds on this one. Partly because it was just the wro,g height, to high to sit, to low to kneel, forcing me to weld with my head kinked to the side. Plus I was shakin a lot today, sucks to get old. Reply:Then I added some plates to add strength. I strapped the face as you can see, but I also plated the bottom of the upper flange, I just forgot to get pics of that part. I did both sides of both the front and rear beams. Reply:I know it's only 10 ga, but you would have probably been better running vertical up vs down on those frame welds. Vertical down really doesn't usually have a lot of penetration and isn't really a good choice for structural welds. Most guys run vertical down because they can't weld up. They usually back off the power because they have issues welding vertical and that just exaggerates the poor penetration issues you get welding down normally..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
