I have a need for a welder cart.  So today I bought a few pieces of a scrap 1x1 16ga square tube. I have a craftsman tool box I'd like to use as a starting point for a welding cart. There are plastic pieces on each side of the box held on by 4 screws. I think if I were to make a shelf and bolt it to the side it would be perfect. The welder going on it is a small Hobart 140 and a small 40cfThe reason behind all this is space is a premium in my 2 car garage with a '68 4 door Impala in there. I originally wanted to make a table cart of some fashion but funding is not there for that kind of project. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. I'm having a little imaginative fabrication blockage at the moment. With plastic piece onWith it offWelder
Reply:IMO plastic off is better plus you can install your shelf flush to the box, keep the bottle behind the welder without blocking the fan flow but also enough room to open and shut off the valve and regulator. Make sure to leave enough room so you can change out the spools and troubleshoot without a hassle. I am assuming the weight of the welder, bottle and shelf can be supported by the tool box without warping the side, if its to heavy it could screw with the drawer slides, Just mount the welder on top of the box for now until you can afford something. If it were me I would buy a cheap service cart from harbor freight and fit the welder with accessories on it, It would be very portable and could be stored in a corner when not in use.
Reply:I'd just rather build something. Gives me MIG time. I checked out the Harbour Freight one.  Seems a little flimsy. This is only a 110v welder but it's freaky heavy.
Reply:I would move the fixed casters outboard of the toolbox under the extension for the bottle mount. I would probably make a rectangular frame that supported the toolbox and bottle and reuse the toolbox casters under the new frame. The toolbox welding cart is an excellent idea. It gives lots of storage for grinder, discs, tips, welpers, etc.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"

Reply:For my mini-migs, I took cheap orange 3 wheeled engine rebuilding stand, removed the fingers that hold the back of the block, and bolted a shelf to it to hold the welder.     Nice height and maneuvers around good.
Reply:Good looking cart.  I have my plasma cutter set up on a tool box similar to your.  Works pretty good.
