Took a load of low value scrap to the yard today for a friend who is moving away. I saw a Lincoln welder/generator all smashed up and a sweet older small bandsaw. I got $7 for the garbage scrap and gave $5 back to take the bandsaw home. Attached ImagesEventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication". Reply:did the guy run over his welder with a bulldozer? Sheesh, that poor thing! We had a big old generator fall off the back of the ladder truck one day, we'd only use a few bungees to hold it down. Well it took one hell of a tumble and ended up in the scrap pile. It took about four or five hours of careful banging and bending but managed to get all the sheet metal bent back, replaced one volt meter and it ran just fine for another ten years.
Reply:You can always sell the copper from the Lincoln..............
Reply:many a welder generator that is rented with a daily charge had been replaced with small inverter welders with a long extension cord.even $10/day at $3650/year adds up. i am not saying you do not need them occasionally but i have done jobs where i took plug off 240 volt extension cord and wired it directly to basement electrical panel on a 30 amp breaker and did job and when done just unhooked it and put cover back on electrical panel. .HF sells 100 foot 10ga 120 volt extension cords with 3 outlets on end which is usually able to plug in somewhere to run power tools. just saying with battery tools and inverters welder many jobs are done different now a days.running a 4.5" disc grinder with a lithium battery was unheard of 40 years ago. now a days contractor can have many batteries in use and many being charged on a job site

Reply:for some guys that's certainly true; and I can't and won't discount it.I just know for me I do all my welding in my garage. A hoist and a small crane meet my lifting needs, and I can diagnose almost any problem with a multimeter... if I can't find parts, I can find comparable replacements that work as well or better (I've almost never had any problems to begin with, and my syncrowace is over 20)...And on top of that all, I have a nastalgic love for the more "historical" items...Sent from my MB865 using TapatalkSynchrowave 250Lincoln WeldPack 180HDPropane torchhandyman's encylopedia collection of all types of toolsJack of all trades, ace of none...

Reply:Great find. Went to my local yard Friday and it was a barren wasteland.Scrap prices are so low, nothing is coming in.
Reply:My buddy and I use to scrap and get .10 cent a pound on steel/light iron. Haven't done it in a couple years but just checked prices a few weeks ago and was seeing 3 cents... really? It's not worth the labor at that price!
Reply:I found an old motor driven Hobart welder, the kind where it has a 3 phase motor turning a DC generator all on one housing, at my local scrap yard. If I had the space I would have bought it.
