I'm new to both welding and the forum - after stalking Home Depots for awhile, I finally found a Lincoln 175 floor model on sale for $150.  Problem is, it's just a big metal box and nothing else.  After I wire up 220 to the garage and get the safety gear I need, what else do I need to get started?  I downloaded the manuals from Lincoln's website and it looks like to try out welding with flux-core wire, I'd need a gun and a clamp.  Any reason not to get a gun like this?http://cgi.ebay.com/Magnum-100L-K530...d=p3286.c0.m14http://cgi.ebay.com/Lincoln-Magnum-1...d=p3286.c0.m14What about the clamp - is that specific to this Lincoln too, or do I have more of a choice? Thanks in advance for reading/answering!
Reply:Any type of Ground Clamp will work- the cable just needs to be the same gauge as stated in the Manual. Those Guns should work just fine.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Personally I would go with the USA Weld gun, USA Weld is HTP America, located just outside Chicago near the airport. They are great people to deal with on parts and service, I have nothing but good to say about them!Second: The ground cable that originally came with that machine I believe was a #6 gage, I would use at least a #4 gage welding cable and a 200 amp clamp, you can pick these up at either your LWS or a hardware store, might want to consider at least 20' of cable!Next question is: Did you get all the stuff with it that goes inside the welding wire compartment like, an 8" spool adapter, the bushing, spring and wing nut that holds the spool in place and acts as a drag to keep the wire from birds nesting, the wire cleaning felt piece and the little plastic wire guide, as well as the wire feed mechanism with the roller and such?#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:Thanks for the responses!I downloaded the parts list from Lincoln's website - besides the gun and clamp (and the gas hose - I don't think I need that until if/when I switch from flux core to MIG) it's missing the wire reel spindle, spacer and nut that holds the reel, but it looks like all the other parts you mentioned are there except for maybe the felt piece which I can't find on the diagram, but I'm not real sure what I'm looking for.
Reply:According to the General Welding supply people here in LA the Lincoln Electric welders that have "HD" on the box are special Home Depot models and the ordinarily available parts for Lincoln Welders won't work  on these HD labeled welders. True ? [email protected], 323-276-8984

Reply:Sandy is correct.  According to Lincoln tech rep, Lincoln machines in same class such as Powermig 180, Promig 180, Weldpak 180HD, SP 180, etc. even though having some differences in some parts, do have a commonality of parts and spec ratings weither sold through a Lincoln dealership, distributor, or retail outlet such as Home Depot or Lowes.
