I have a high-frequency tig welder (Chicago Electric) Is it possible to convert a high-frequency tig welder to a scratch start tig. I would like to do sheet metal work on a car that has computer components. I understand that a high-frequency tig welder will affect computer and electronic parts. Any comments would be appreciated.

Reply:Just disconnect the battery and weld it up.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:Leave the battery connected.Put your work lead as close as possible to the weld (under 12") and go for it.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Leave your welder in the mode you are comfortable working in.2) On the vehicle you want to weld on, the battery will damp out any spurious signals that might get into the electrical system. Leave it connected.3) As mentioned before, go ahead and weld on the body and/or frame. Just keep the work clamp close, so the electrical noise stays confined.
Reply:Ah, right. Welding on a vehicle. D'oh.One thing worth mentioning- on ships they don't allow HF start either because some of the newer ones have tons of sensitive electronics, but there's one other thing worth mentioning: you're supposed to ground to the workpiece, and not the hull of the ship. That guarantees having the shortest possible route from clamp to tungsten.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞

Reply:Thanks for all comments so far!
Reply:No reason to disconnect the battery what so ever. No muffler shop anywhere does this and welds on everything. Just make sure your ground clamp is on the same piece you are welding.I have never ever once disconnected a battery either while welding on any car that has came threw the shop.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
