I just picked up a mag drill and have a question about how the base operates. It is a Rockwell drill motor on a Bux/Shaper base. My question is how the adjustable base operates. There is a long threaded hole above the magnet on the left side that had a short bolt in it. I assume that there is supposed to be a locking bolt of some sort in there? After some penetrating oil and elbow grease I was able to get the base to swivel on the magnet. Is it supposed to also move laterally or just swivel? How does it lock and what does the locking bolt look like? The seller told me that this bolt is not original, just something he put in there to fill the hole. Here is a pic of the drill. Any help appreciated! Attached ImagesMiller millermatic 251Miller aircrafter 330st, wp201961 Lincoln SA200Ellis 1600 bandsawLogan 820 latheSouth Bend 13"Bridgeport M Head
Reply:I'm not too sure what long threaded hole you're talking about. If it's the one directly opposite the drill motor than that would be for a bracing foot of all-thread that keeps the mag base from levering off the magnet and gives the mag base a bit better chance to work its magic...the mag base would have to come straight off the metal its attached to rather than 'peeling' off the metal. Otherwise, the only other hole on mine has a toggle headed bolt similar to what you would find on a rotating vise base to lock down the rotation. Mine is an older model, but swivels as yours does for minor positional changes...if you want/need more you'll have to do it by turning off the mag base and manually moving the entire mag drill.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:The mag base on mine looks a bit different than yours. ( Yours is WAY cleaner BTW) I got this when a friend passed away and haven't had a chance to F with it much. The mag doesn't work, so it's on the "around to" project list. Attached Images. No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:The hole I am talking about is right above the swivel, I would say where yours has a toggle bolt. The hole must be 3-4" long and looks to be threaded all the way. Would you mind taking yours all the way out and taking a picture of it so I can make one for mine? Also, I see the foot that the all-thread goes into.thanksMiller millermatic 251Miller aircrafter 330st, wp201961 Lincoln SA200Ellis 1600 bandsawLogan 820 latheSouth Bend 13"Bridgeport M Head
Reply:I had a few minutes this afternoon to take the base apart. Here is what I discovered. The big nut in the center was too tight. There is a piece missing that goes in the hole first before the locking bolt. In the second pic you can see the rod I made to replace the missing piece as well as the cutout in the base plate that allows about an inch of lateral adjustment. There is a stop on the plate that prevents a full 360 degree rotation and thus winding the wiring up. I was going to make a swivel handle to attach to the bolt with a roll pin but that proved to ambitious for the time I had. I ended up just welding a piece of rod to the bolt for a handle.
