I am in the market for a new impact driver for my truck. I been eyeballing the the IR Thundergun. Anybody got one and what do you think of it?I found it for $205 with free shipping.....BTW
Reply:I picked one up in a pawn shop for 35 bucks 3 years ago and it works like a champ. The rubber boot is beat but I haven't run across anything it won't take off including rusty head bolts from blocks that were in some guy's back yard for 5 years. That's a pretty good price for a Thundergun. I like the Snap On MG725 but it's almost twice the price but they are lighter and I like the balance better and they have about twice the torque. That's a deal for the IR, grab it. I haven't seen them under $250 or so.
Reply:I actually been on line looking and I found it for $195.00 shipped.I also looked at the chicago pneumatic CP7759Q it about $100 more.Brief check on my part and I need to check out the Snap On first, I am looking for breakaway torque mainly, so I don't need to jump into a 3/4 inch drive. My impact sockets are Snap On good match, and in good shape used is OK with me.Any comments on different brands are welcome, nothing set in stone here.Thanks.
Reply:I have had one for years, one tough impact.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:if the thunder gun is not available a 244 is another tough as nails gun.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:For the last 12 years, I have owned the MAC-stamped version of the 244 that Tozzi recommends above. It is loud and heavy compared to the new plastic and mufflered guns, but it gets the job done properly. Mine has worked on everything from Honda Civics to Eagle rock crushers. It's powerful enough that I never even bothered with a 3/4" gun, but went straight to a 1" instead and adapt down to 3/4" drive for the rare occasions that my 244 won't do the job.
Reply:I am a big fan of Snap-On guns. I always thought they had more power and the anvil was a little longer, which made socket retention much better. Now the last time I bought one was probably over 15 yrs ago. But back when I turned wrenches for a living, I remember guys with the IR's flinging sockets across the shop when they didn't have a hand on it. And it wasn't because of the retainer ring. I've seen it happen on weeks old guns. My Snap-On guns, with the longer anvil, still wont fling a socket, even a universal jointed one. Just a little FYI."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Hey Sticky-Fingers, I had a Snap-On for awhile - one of them with the adjustable muffler lever just ahead of your thumb on the left side. That sucker was a dog exhausting through the handle, but did have decent power if you bypassed the muffler. Every now and then it would get a bolt out that my 244 wouldn't loosen. My problem with it was the muffler lever was always closing unless you held it open, and like I said it didn't have any power at all exhausting through the muffler. I ended up tying the lever open with a zip tie which then was always chafing my hand when I used the gun. When I left that shop I sold it to the owner and have seldom been happier to see a tool leave my ownership. Not that plenty of my tools don't end up in Chicago...have you put the new roof over that sea-can yet so they don't all rust up?
Reply:That Snappy must have been newer. Mine always vents above your trigger finger, up and away in front of you. But it is not adjustable.Yep the roof is up! If you look at the thread, I had to do it twice because DSW had to stick his nose into my business!!! In fact, you're probably eggin me on right now You and DSW were probably sittin back sayin, lets make this guy do it over!!! I just can't trust ANYONE here!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
