Hi everyone....Today I decided I wanted to burn through a couple lbs of 7018 I have had in the oven for too long.......I grabbed some 1/4" scrap from the pile and fixed up a little 2F joint.... the edges were left rough just as I plasma cut them a couple years ago....... i removed the dross from the joint to be welded...... but otherwise, no cleaning.....Since the fit-up was close but not perfect.... I put in a 5p+ pass on each side at 90 amps in order to fill in the jagged fitment....... from there I put in 20 to 25 passes on each side with 1/8" 7018. For measure: I use a Precision TIG 185 and ran 125 amps and only stopped long enough to wipe off slag and clean my lens. With that prelude..... my question is based on my photos below.....I cut the piece up with a porta-band and from I can tell... the interpasses look ok..... HOWEVER: as you can see, there is void right where the joint was fit up...I have never sliced up a Fillet weld before so I'm not sure if this is normal or a fail on my first 6010 pass before I started in on 7018.....Can anyone shed light on this?Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:I think you’re expecting too much from the 6010. Far as penetration. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:CEP I think you are exactly right..... I knew my fit was jagged and somehow believed I could pop through that with 6010. Clearly after the slice up I now know different........As I remember my schooling.... I spent a great deal of time fitting my pipe but all of my earlier classes with plate welds were done with a track torch and the edges were clean.... Today my edge was not.....I never knew I could learn from something as simple as 2F.........Basics are more important that I have given credit........Thanks CEP....Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Bevel the top plate, and gap it about 3/32”. Then run a 6010 pass. It will be a totally different story.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:You should polish them and put naval jelly on them now. It's only 6$ at Home Depot
Reply:What your swing is the gap under the top plate. Your fit up wasn't tight when you tacked the pieces prior to welding.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
