I know this may be a stupid question, but i am beginning to MIG welding. And I am right handed. Do i start to travel from right to left or left to right on my work piece?
Reply:As a beginner you would do what feels natural to you that will allow you to use the proper torch angle and clear unobstructed view of the joint and weld puddle.  Then later on, you can switch things up to take yourself out of your comfort zone in order to expand on your abilities. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:You can push or pull - both work fine with minor differences.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I like to push Mig. I’m right handed, so I go from right to left. But you should learn to weld both directions. Now if you are running dual shield, or self shielded wire, anything that produces slag, you should drag. So being right handed, I go from left to right for dragging.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:i second that CEP.learn both, sometimes you will only be able to use one and not the other, but general rule of thumb;GASLESS (flux core) = drag (right handed = left to right)GAS = push (right handed = right to left)thats only for the best and easiest results for a beginner. An advanced welder can weld any direction with the same penetration and quality, but start with the basics and go from there.little_sparky
Reply:I believe most schools would start you pulling steel, and pushing alum. They would have you pull steel to maintain penetration to the root and not pile up the bead. You would want to push alum to allow the arc to lift the smut as you travel. ALU being so electrically and thermally conductive will give you the penetration. In either case proper torch angle is important. I myself prefer a slight tilt off of 90 degrees. What you end up with is what works for you.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
