Hi I was just wondering if there is any one on here from Ontario and what you guys are paying for steel any shapes. I bought 2''x 2''x 1/8" it was $58 per 24 foot length.  2''x 10''x 3/16'' was $250 per 24 feet. 5''x 3'' angle 1/4" was $99 per 20 feet. Just wondering what others are paying and where they buy their steel. I bought mine at Kitchener steel service center and they deliver for free. I dont bother with B and D anymore because they are far to much. I bought off  a guy on Kijiji selling steel fairly cheap although it was second quality but It worked for what I needed at the time.

Reply:Where are you getting that ?I buy at  Hunter SteelThey charge cutting fees on everythingIt doesn't matter if you talk to the salesman or the shop guy, if you ask for cold rolled, they will just say OK then cut and sell you hot rolled. Not sure if that's deliberate or just stupidityThey have big channel, W beam, angle and square tube, decent prices of you buy the whole lengths.I always request price and availability - no surprisesA local fabricator is a dealer for Canada Steel, they sell to me at retail for $1/ pound for hot rolled, $2 for cold rolledbut their inventory is dependent on what they normally use in their fab business.but it's the best deal if they have it because it's close to me.GTS -PMSCambridgeGolden Triangle Specialty Metals - sell cold rolled, brass, aluminum, plastics like nylon, uhmw, bronze, toolsteelbig old dark  ratty warehouse, but they are busy,  have stock and I think they supply places like Metal Supermarkets.http://www.goldentrianglesteel.com/PMSSback of the building sells angle and such.Metal supermarkets, the most expensive steel, run by idiots. But if you need a small piece before noon on Saturday, that may save you.
Reply:yes that has been my experience too it is more per pound if you buy small quantities and if they have to cut off a short piece.never saw a store that did not have a piece of paper explaining price break for larger quantities and cost to cut pieces.of course if you do not ask about price they will just get what you ask for and tell you how much and you pay for it. i have also bought $500. worth of steel at a time and 20 years later some of it was so rusty it ended up going to the junk yard and sold for scrap.
Reply:Here in PEI, 2"x2" x.125 is 48.00 a length, (I'm assuming your talking about square tubing, as I see you bought it in 24'), 5"X3"X.250 angel is 14.00 per ft. here

Reply:I pretty much pay $0.50/lb for steel in Rochester, NY. Hot rolled, cold rolled, flat & structural shapes. Sometimes I pay for cuts but usually just have long stuff chopped in half as you can't rely on minimum wage to read a tape measure...Last edited by xryan; 01-07-2016 at 04:56 PM.
Reply:Today i paid $48.50 per 24' length of 2x2x0.125 and $255 per 24' length of 6x2x0.250 3x3x3/16 angle was $65 for 20'

Reply:I shop Klein Steel 90% of the time. Tubing, flat, angle, channel $0.50/lb. I don't know what that equated to in sillymeters and loonies for you guys across the falls. I put it in the bed or on a rack that doesn't bend. We also have a new place at Ben Weitsman Scrap that is selling new surplus steel, they were just getting setup so I haven't bought anything there yet, but their prices seems about the same. We used to have a great little place in town, Tambe Industries, that was two brothers that ran the place. They had quite a wide selection and really went out of their way for you being such a small supplier, but they are no longer around. Reply:There is a new building at their site at 80 Steel Street, just to the east of the weight station. Reply:[QUOTE=WNY_TomB;6736071].on receipt they usually convert feet to lbs and give price. for short lengths i put stuff on a cart and they weigh the cart and subtract cart weight to get lbs of metal on cart..they even have cart and scale with tv camera so they can see scale weight where you pay for it on a television. .basically the opposite of a junk yard where they weigh and you buy metal rather than they weigh and they give you money. by having many racks with short pieces of metal often people look around and get a few extra different sizes they might need later[/QUOTBy the lb is  an interesting way to buy, my supplier sometimes get deals on certain loads and they will pass those deals to their customers, so it wouldn't be an across the board price for them if it was by weight. They are a very large company, and usually receive 3-4 truck loads a week.

Reply:I am paying between .37 and .52 cents per pound in Idaho depending on where I get my steel. I get pretty decent rates though because I purchase a lot of steel from both places over the course of a year. That is for HR sheet and plate. CR is a bit more.
Reply:my guess is if you buy many tons and get a truck load it is cheaper per lb and if you like myself get only 1 or 2 pieces at a time it is $.65 or higher.supply and demand. if business at steel supplier is good they can afford to try to charge higher price and if business is slow they lower price to try to bring in more business or sales.negotiating price or talking about price before a sale is more common in other countries than in the USA. most steel suppliers will charge more for small orders and many have minimum order amounts. those with lower minimum order or no minimum order amounts just often double price per pound
