I can't seem to find the old threads on this but.....Would running an inverter welder, say a Thermal Arc 211i or a 252i off my Ranger 8 be a problem or damage the inverter  machine?  I remember in an old post someone said the Honda generators provide the purest generator electric.  I have to say I don't know the particulars in this area.  Thanks for any feed back.
Reply:It should be fine.  There have been tons of threads about generatorsAirco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:I run my plasma and migwelder of gen power all the time. If you saw my spring break rebuild thread everything was done of gen power except the chopsaw and 4 1/2in grinders
Reply:Your ranger 8 likely puts out power that is every bit as clean a honda. I ran the office off an old ranger for day when the power was out. Didn't bother the computers. The UPSs charged fine... and they can be picky on power.
Reply:Thanks Guys.  I knew you all would help me out.  I know this isn't the topic but since we are here....I am on the fence over getting a MillerMulti-matic and a TA 211i.  It seems like the duty cycles are similar.  My gut is telling me to stick with Blue but the TA's are getting much positive feed back.  A 252i  crossed my mind to.  Anyone ever run spool gun for aluminum with any of these machines?  for say....1/4".
Reply:Miller used to advertise that you could take a trailblazer 302 and weld with two operators one welding off machine the other using a machine plugged into the 50A power side .
Reply:One of the most important things about running any equipment off a generator is that a generator puts out the most stable voltage in the middle of its operating range.  If you need 10,000 watts to run a welding machine, I wouldn't run it on an 11,000 watt generator.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Inverters are actually quite forgiving with regard to voltage and frequency.  Typically +/-10% which any properly adjusted, running and loaded generator should be able to provide.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I dont know why but my migweld side will run the full 200 amps but when i flip it to stick mode im limited to an 1/8in rod. Any bigger and it bogs the gen down til it stalls
Reply:Thermaldynamics said "good to go" when I asked them about running their  inverter plasma cutters off generator power.
Reply:I have the 181 I and have run a fair amount of aluminum with the spoolgun. Its not real heavy duty tho. If you plan on running 10 pounds or so of wire a year it would be fine. If your running 10 pounds or so a week you will need something heavier like millers 30 A.
Reply:Like Steve said the Thermal Arc machines are probably the best bargain in a new machine. The Miller multimatic is a small machine with a big price. The output on stick and TIG is better on the181 or the 211. You could probably buy the 211 and a generator for the cost of the Multimatic .

Reply:I know I was just making an example of the price difference. Personally I would run a suitcase off the Ranger 8.
Reply:I have regularly run my 211i in mig and stick of the a TB 280nt.  Runs like a champ. I love the 211i.  I think the mm200 is better on mig, but stick output and duty cycle is much better on the 211i. Throw in the price diff and the TA is hard to beat.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300;  Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner
Reply:I have a trailblazer 325 and Miller recommends adding a dynasty 200dx for welding aluminum on site. Welder generator, meet inverter welder. Problem solved.Teach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes
Reply:At the work site we take the 110/220 v inverters up in the boom lift, plug in at the receptical in the basket and we are off and running for the small stuff.  If I go TA I think I will go to the 252i.  The Tweco spool gun they say to get with that machine is a ball buster in price though.  I guess since it has to be rate in amps to match the machine amps.
