How do I determine the % of silver content to be ideal for a particular brazing application.I've seen 5% to 55% silver rod.Any charts available?Jeff
Reply:The less silver, the more heat it takes to melt it.  If you are brazing several parts onto a piece and need to do that in several steps...start with the hardest (least silver, highest temperature to melt) and move up to the softest (most silver, lowest temperature to melt), so you don't 'undo' your previous work as you add new stuff.  Other than that, it is just a matter of 'how strong do you need it.'  Personally, just because of cost, I tend to try to use silicon bronze brazing rod, if at all possible.  Silver is expensive...so I don't use it, unless I need it for some reason (a difficult to adhere part...sometimes silver will do the trick, when nothing else works).I am sure there are charts somewhere, regarding PSI strength of different silver-content brazing rods, but I don't know where they are.  You should only be using brazing when 'welding really isn't necessary' (not a critical failure joint/no lives are in danger if it fails), or desirable (you really won't be able to fix or control warping from excessive heat or you don't want to temper or anneal the piece after joining to regain it's original characteristics) and solder isn't enough (high vibration, pressure or heat on the joint).KevLast edited by Machine_Punk; 09-12-2014 at 12:55 AM.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Thanks a lot for your time.really appreciated.Jeff
Reply:It depends on your application 5-15% is mostly used in the HVACR industry. The really high content silver like 55% is used to braze dissimilar metals like stainless to copper and requires a flux.I just bought a tube of 15% and it was about 100 the 55% was 65 a troy ounce plus flux.
