Not to worry I am " NOT " jumping into this anytime soon but: Has anyone ever seen a Harley Davidson motor on a air compressor? Certainly would be a novelty. If anyone has a pic of one please post it.
Reply:I've never seen a harley driven compressor, but I've seen a few Harley chainsaws before...[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Fx5JeWdW8"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Fx5JeWdW8[/ame]Harley compressor would be a waste IMO... at least hotsaws have show appeal. What's the appeal of a harley compressor? "Look how fast the needle on this pressure gauge rises"? Or just making the most noise?

Reply:" Nope, that would be the last decade of ANY of the old British twins. Word for the wise, convert to a magneto if you want them to "Reminds me of two jokes:1. Lucas ( electronics ) Prince of Darkness2. Q: Why didn't the British ever make computers? A: They couldn't figure out how to make them leak oil

Reply:People have made compressors outof them. The pump not the motor but they were not very good.
Reply:" People have made compressors outof them. The pump not the motor but they were not very good. "That doesn't suprise me, whats the compression on a Harley....something low.
Reply:Worse compressor you can ever get, a air-cooled crankshaft single pin will overheat if you try to load it for a long period with a high pressure pump, but anything is possible... A 75HP+ compressor to do what? This is sick!...Don't tell me you whant to use the engine as a pump! Because it's simply totaly insane.... I have seen compressor done with converted VW 4 cylinders air-cooled engine (2 cylinder used as a pump and the 2 others for engine power) Some claim getting 50 cfm/100psi with 25HP but they need to cool down the output since it melt rubber air hose, It's a cheap and powerfull option compare to a commercial unit but are they reliable? Now we open another can of worm...Last edited by OldSkull; 04-17-2012 at 08:10 AM.Miller MM211Esab Mini Arc 161LTSEsab Handy Plasma 380Duck tapeTy- rapKool-aid
Reply:" A 75HP+ compressor to do what? "No an older Harley would be 35 HP ish. Those VW kits are 58 CFM, http://dunnrightinc.com/Sulair ( I think ) did tow behind compressors using a Ford 302 Block not sure of the CFM but I think it was getting close to 100.

Reply:35HP? You mean a old Flathead then? Are you out of your mind? This is vantage stuff!! Shame on you! Industrial unit got water cooled engine, the Ford 302 was water cooled too, Old Harley engine are not design to be "static" they are air cooled, produce massive harmonic and leak like old Pontiac Trans Am T-TopSeal the case with JB weld, use big electric fan or better tow the fracking crap to cool it down!Miller MM211Esab Mini Arc 161LTSEsab Handy Plasma 380Duck tapeTy- rapKool-aid

Reply:" Man, what a waste of good American iron"Why? The bike sits in the garage 10 months out of the year collecting dust, the compressor gets used 4-5 days a week, which is probably the reason " NOT" to do it as it isn't reliable enough. And If I was to do it I would be looking at 50-70 CFM serious air.Mute point I bought a new Robin Subaru 13.5 EH41 yesterday, and like I said I am not really looking for another odd ball project right now.
Reply:fredschrome , your threads had me thinkin.....i first imagined it with a V-twin harley motor and a V-twin pump.........polished........ASME tank painted for show , black and orange with HD lettering and stripeing............ASME pressure switchs and controls......all cert and ready for show , on the back of anyones flat bed rig OR the shop thermal arc 252i - millermatic 350P - miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs - Hypertherm 1250 G3

Reply:We had snow 2 weeks ago, and nobody is riding yet too cold. And I can still find patches of unmelted stuff under the trees. its 3-4 month season here on bikes, end of Sept raining and getting cold some years we get the indian summer and its nice until early Oct, and we still have crummy days in June. Real short season.
Reply:Woi2ld,There is a Kellogg American 20-25 hp V-twin on Ebay, that would be a good match.Yeah I like old american iron
Reply:Yeah, the weather is strange here this year. It was warm, 80's, in March and no it is in the 50's. But no snow. I would hate to see a vintage HD pieced out to build something else, but it would be cool as hell, polish and paint as previously stated.Tim Beeker.
Reply:" vintage HD pieced out to build something else "Oh I wouldn't do that I would find the motor by itself, I wouldn't cut up and old48-early 50's machine. The were a couple of reasons I looked at Harley's, 1. parts can be got 2. They can be made to look nice 3. high torgue, low RPMIt wouldn't have to be a Harley but on an older USA ( only ) motor I can't think of one that would end up looking nicer, A old Wisconin or such will never look pretty, and you would never get pimp parts.
Reply:Ok you want a good old USA piece of iron! Most insane idea I got in mind is a Crocker! It's by far the most wanted Antique US motorcycle I can thing of! A Crocker engine in good condition resale value can be estimate to let's say $40K-$50K? To bad anybody try to duplicate those one like Kiwi did for vantage Indian engine Crockerhttp://www.crockermotorcycleco.com/Kiwihttp://www.kiwiindian.com/engines.htmlLet's dream a bit...Even if they got none US engineshttp://www.falconmotorcycles.com/gallery.html#0Miller MM211Esab Mini Arc 161LTSEsab Handy Plasma 380Duck tapeTy- rapKool-aid
Reply:" Most insane idea I got in mind is a Crocker"Way cool motor, now thats a waste on a air compressor, those things are collectable, 300K for a restored bikeThat Kiwi motor is awesome. But what head would you put on a 90 HP motor? That would be a 150 cfm compressor.
Reply:Not that I was looking but I stumbled across a stainless steel air tank on McMaster, twin V motor, and a Twin "V" pump on thast and detailed would look real nice. |
