Drilling into SS

Is high speed steel can rust ? i mean, at my job someone was using a belt sander for sharpening drills, but we use this sander only for stainless, and then another worker told him to not doing that because it will contaminated the stainless pieces that we polish on this sander! and the guy argue him with ''is this drill can rust ? NO! so it can't contaminated stainless'' but i don't know for you guys but i've often see old rusted drills, so is this true ? Or what you guys recomend to drills into stainless ?Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:Yes, it can certainly make the stainless rust.  You can use a pickling and passivisation paste to remove any deposited carbon from the SS that might have been contaminated, or get a clean belt and use it again.And the drill will certainly rust, its carbon steel.  Heat treatment and high finish will inhibit rust, but not prevent it.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Any carbon steel will contaminate stainless, but if carbon steel comes in contact stainless, just acid scrub it with barkeepers friend so it keeps the stainless from rusting.

Reply:haha english is not even a 2nd language i know my english is really bad, funny thing about that is my girlfriend is half american and canadian so she speak a perfect english but not me haha! but at least i don't pretend im good in english, im just a metal geek who work with old timers and try to stole some trade metal worker tips and trick on internet forums wich is mostly english! thanks for the help guys!Calculator > Bevel Square
