What do you guys think of this for a compromise between portable and fixed?http://www.toolsteal.com/index.php?c...50&prod_id=527Last edited by RhymesWithBob; 04-23-2012 at 02:44 PM.
Reply:looks to be way too expensive to me..   I would get a 4x6 horizontal bandsaw from harbor freight before I would buy that..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:The simple plate attachment is far less expensive.
Reply:Have on some where should have saved my money. I don't ever use it. Mine is for a Porter Cable but same basic thing. Not nearly as useful as i thought.
Reply:check out swagg off road at www.swagoffroad.com  I am not sure if there is 1 or 2 g's in the title but you find tables that they make for several different band saws, they are portable and easy to use.  I dont have a saw or a table but been thinking about it and that would be the way to go, just my own opinion.  If you do check it out let us know the outcome.ThanksRon

Reply:I like my Milwaukee, and parts such as rollers and wheel rubbers are available from ereplacementparts.com.100 bucks is a fair price for one. It's not my main cutting tool though. That's a Metabo SIX inch grinder with abrasive cutting wheels. I don't buy 4.5" angle grinders any more, since the 6" will run 4.5 rocks and flap discs.Portable bandsaws are great for cutting tubing etc. I've cut 3/8" and 1/2" plate (slowly, gently!) with the Metabo and you can get a NICE straight cut. It'll cut heavy rod (axles, etc) much better than a band saw.Last edited by farmall; 04-24-2012 at 09:14 AM.
Reply:This is what I have and i really like it:http://www.swagoffroad.com/Portaband_V_THREE.htmlI wanted a vertical bandsaw, but did not have the space.  So, I have this Swag stand with my Portaband and a dry cut metal miter saw.  I have not encountered cuts that I cannot make.Lincoln Powermig 255Hypertherm Powermax 45Thermal Arc 161SOxweld 24R OA TorchStill Looking for an Old Round Top Idealarc 250

Reply:Well, amazon.com sells it for about $60 less, but it still doesn't come with the saw.http://amzn.com/B000022486

Reply:Originally Posted by kazlxI have the same stand.  Definitely worth it.  The portaband is nice.  The only worth it upgrade for me would be to go to a full blown metal bandsaw, but then you are talking 4x the price.  The portaband is relatively cheap, works well, easy to convert between stand and free hand and the blades are cheap and available everywhere. Not a huge fan of my dry cut saw.... would like to buy a cold saw.
Reply:They both have pros and cons for me.  The dry cut saw cuts significantly faster, but throws hot chips everywhere.  The blade can deflect and I find that the clamping mechanism (on mine at least - a DeWallt) sucks.  It takes forever to set up a cut to anything remotely accurate, like say going from a 90 to a 45.  The fence just always seems to want to move because you are clamping the work at an angle.  For say, rough chopping, it's ideal. The portaband is relatively accurate, although the miter gauge isn't very useful for more than anything other than a push block.  Has nothing to do with the stand, but the design of the portaband.  The blade is twisted for the design of the tool and is never really straightened out perpendicular the table at the cutting area, or anywhere between the rollers.  It's more held semi straight.  On the plus side, it's easy enough to scribe a line over dye kem (or a sharpie) and get a good cut depending on your coordination.  It cuts slower, but also just makes a little pile of shavings under the saw instead of flinging them everywhere. That being said, I don't do production anything, and I really dislike using the chop saw.  I got to use a Scotchman cold saw a while ago and it was ideal for me.  I would also keep and use the portaband, it's really versatile. But everyone has their preferences and lots of people seem to like the carbide chop saws.  I hate it.  It's loud, inaccurate and messy, although not as much as an abrasive.
