Hi all,   I recentley bought a Ranger 9 w/150 hrs on it and it came with a spool gun and a  magnum sg  control module. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this setup? The guy said it worked good with aluminum and I was wondering how it would work with steel or flux core. I know the gun is larger than an ordinary mig gun but it should get me by till I can get a suitcase or other mig unit. Thanks alot.
Reply:If you are talking about the Magnum SG spool gun, we run them on Lincoln Wirematic 255 machines at work.  They are a direct hookup to the machine with no control module needed.  You do need the module to run it off the Ranger 9.  We use the spoolgun strictly for aluminum and have never tried steel or flux core with it.  We use the main machine (255) to run our steel and fluxcore.  As for the spoolgun, some days I love it, other days, I hate it.  When all is good (contact tip, wire tension, spool friction, wire speed, and volts set), I could ask for none better.  But let just one item get just a little out of range, and all hell breaks loose just trying to get it to put down a decent bead.  It is one finicky beast, but when its on, ITS ON!  One major weakness I find is the cable bundle to the gun as it tends to be fairly fragile and if one is not careful can be easily damaged.  The bundle will also tend to take a set shape depending on how its stored are rolled up.  We have had to replace a couple of cable bundles on a few of our spool guns and they are not cheap.  About $700 a piece, darn near the price of a complete gun.  This is probably not the info you were looking for but I figured I would give you my experience with it.  Good luck and congrads on your new setup!A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:Hey thanks I appreciate the information, especially the part about the cable bundle being fussy with how its stored. I will probably let it sit for now because its about 15 degrees in the garage and chances are that cable is a little stiff. The prior owner mainly used it for AL but I thought I would try the flux core anyway. I have been a pipewelder for 20 yrs tigging the root and sticking it out, and had never used a mig till a short while ago, man oh man is it fast and easy or what? Made me feel like a caveman. We always would bust on mig welders before for not being real welders but when you get them running good and you know what you are looking at they can be really usefull.                             Thanks again.
Reply:To answer one of your questions? Yes it will run Steel and/or Fluxcore (Gas or Self Shielded)  JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
