Heres a bumper I'm working on for my 07 dodge ram. The front bumper is a ranch hand i believe, so i figured I'd try to build something custom to kind of match the front, plus the rear was dented all to hell anyway. Picked up a Everlast powerarc 140ST a couple months ago, this is the first time i've really run it hard, so I figured i'd throw a review in with the pictures of the bumper project. I've been looking for a ac/dc tig welder for a while now, and have it narrowed down to the everlast 200 or 250 ac/dc models, but wasnt quite ready to drop that kind of cash on a brand of machine that the only thing i know about it is from internet research. So i decided to give this 140 a shot, was on sale for 249 shipped on amazon. I am very impressed with the machine itself, I honestly dont think that there is a better machine out there for the money. Now for the rest of the stuff that came with the machine..... Suitcase - Opened it once (the initial open) , lid fell off, threw the case away.Tig torch - bulky, ugly, didnt make it to the trash can, but was instantly swapped out for with a weldcraft.Stinger - small, light, kind of nice for home/hobby, but wouldnt make it on a jobsiteGround - small , light, might be good for some soldering, but I burnt it up half hour into welding.Dinse connectors - junk , they fit poorly, (I had to file the locking tab on one of the down to get it to fit), they get stuck , the rubber insulators come offAll of this stuff is usable, and may work great for some, but not for me, In my opinion I think the accessories should atleast be able to hang with the machine,, but my main concern is the machine, and so far so good with that, on 110 it will trip my 15 amp breaker, which was expected, on 220 with a 50 amp breaker i've had no issues, and havent had it shut down for duty cycle either, but anyway, on to some bumper pics Heres a pic of the front ranch hand bumper, and some pics of the bumper in progress
Reply:Heres some pics of some of the welds, Tig welding was done with 1/8 tungsten and filler wire at 120ish amps, (yeah i know... tig welding on a bumper) really just wanted to run the machine. Stick welding was done with 3/32 7018 ,
Reply:This is just to get an idea of what its going to look like, its not finished obviously, and is not in its final resting place (tail gate wont even open where its at now), just hanging out on the reese hitch right now. To finish it off i am going to cover the top , box the liscense plate cutout in, and wrap the sides with 16 gauge diamond plate, blast it and spray bomb it gloss black, will probably be a week or two before i've got the time to get back at it , but will post more pics as I work on it
Reply:200 views and no replys, not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing , I'm open to feedback , suggestions, whatever , kind of just winging this bumper trying to work with what I've got
Reply:Looks good so far to me. I got the 160sth a few months back and have been happy with the machine. Like you the accessories were not so good. Stick welding with it is smooth. Just a hobby for me but would like to make a bumper for my F250 s lot like you are doing. Post more pics as you go.
Reply:Yeah it's a no frills machine. And I think it's a good value for hobby welder that would like to try their hand at TIG. I had one and testing it took 6 rods of 7018 140amps ran in rapid succession to hit duty cycle. As soon as it cooled, ran 5 rods twice to hit duty cycle. So it's Perry good on the duty cycle actually. Replacing the leads and torches are pretty much a given on the low budget machines. Even Lincoln and Miller use those cheap pop metal ground clamps on most of their machines. For what they sell for I really would expect a brass clamp. BTW I was even able to run it off a cheap modified sine wave inverter that was in my truckTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:It's definitely as no frills machine, but can still do real work. All of the SS pipe at our farm and dairy processing is .065 wall and I can weld all day and never hit duty cycle. Stick welding is the weakness of this machine. I've learned that you just can't use 1/8" electrodes in any project beyond a tack. 3/32" is the largest I will use, often I limit stick welding to 1/16" 6011. I really like the look of the front bumper. Is the rear going to be covered in plate? I would think that matching bumpers would be more appealing. Nice welding in any case.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:I am going to diamond plate the license plate cover , the top , and going to wrap the sides , will kind of follow the concept of the front bumper , going to make mounts this weekend and hopefully plate it and finish it next weekend
Reply:Kind of forgot that I made this thread , bumper kind of got put on the back burner , its about 90 percent done , I will post some updated pics tmmw or so, hopefully that will give me the ambition I need to finish this thing so I can paint it and call it good |
