I have a 1969 sa200 Fowler mainliner it welds ok but it don't cap very good let's just say 11,000 dollar mistake so I'm going to try a set of 300 amp brushes in it but I don't know witch ones to change so any help would help
Reply:I suggest you give Bill and Kaye Sellon at Bill's Welder Repair http://billswelderrepair.com/home.html a call.  They'll get you headed in the right direction and help sort things out.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:So I called bills talked to some lady she said that t-344 brushes were for a 400 amp and that is not true and that they put 300 amp brushes in a 200 to begin with and by changing the size of the brush would not help.so I called a local welding machine mechanic and he set me straight he said if your looking at the front of the machine you change the 1 o'clock set and the 7 o'clock set but he does not suggest the use of profax brand brushes for they are to hard.
Reply:I think I read somewhere that adding the 300 amp brushes makes the puddle real watery, if that's true is that what you want?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:puting 300 brushes in it will make it carry more metal im told and make smoother arc.so now i have to order some from fowler he sells some that are soft and the profax set i bought are to hard im told
Reply:When you do this would you please post back and let us know how it worked out? I don't run a lot of 60xx rod, so who am I to even talk. But I find it strange that my Shorthoods stack better than my Red Face machines. But I feel my Red Face machines run 7018 better than the Shorthoods. I was talking to a pipeliner about this, and asked him if the reason why was that the Shorthoods have 4-gears, and the Red Face have 5-gears. He replied no it was the rpm of the engine. Do you have any experience with this?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Maybe it's just me but if you spent $11K with Fowler and you're unhappy with the way his stuff performs and you're convinced the 300 brushes are the answer seems to me he should toss in a set. Reply:If I paid $11,000.00 for a Fowler Mainliner and didn't like the way it capped, I'd be haulin' it into Morgan City for a tune-up by Hybriweld. They can tell you what you really bought, I'm doubtin' seriously that it is a Mainliner. Does it have the Yanmar diesel? Just because someone has added parts from Hybriweld does not make it a Mainliner. Even if I'm wrong and it is a Fowler Mainliner, I'd still be takin' into Morgan City to be fixed.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:It is a mainliner I took it to Tom myself it took 8 months to get it back I would take it back but its a 4 hour drive and every time I have called he don't have much to say about it so ill do it my self or take it to someone local
Reply:Cep I do know that the shorthood is a 1450 rpm and the red face is 1550 the reason for this is the exciter armature but as far as one welding one type of rod better I thank its just the machines rack placement rpm ocv and volts all play a part when I get the brushes put In I'll let u know if it does any better if it don't the next step may be a 1800rpm exciterLast edited by jlclark798; 01-31-2011 at 08:57 AM.
Reply:first thing i would check would be the ocv on the machine, in 20 yrs of welding with a 200 i have never run anything but 200 brushes, lots of smoke and mirror mystery shows out there but you can change everything you want just by rolling the rack, i believe slowhand has a thread on how to properly set the ocv, my machines only get worked on by stumpf's in mascoutah illinois, in all my yrs of welding with my sa's they always are able to get me back on the line "stackin and packin"
Reply:Well guys I put the brushes in and it welds like a totally different machine the puddle is alot softer and it don't brake ark or stick on the side like it was welding better than ever Im going to put a set in my 72 and see what it does to it
Reply:try 88equipped.com I love these brushes! Best on the market
Reply:Nothing like digging up a 4+ year old thread to promote another smoke & mirrors product.I'm still waiting to see the scope screen shot supporting the claim of a better wave form when using these way overpriced items.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I responded to your PM too and as I stated there, your machine's parts break-down calls for the T-2687 main brushes so . . . However, I recently saw an OEM Lincoln box of T-344 brushes that member Waggoner72 offered up and sold which clearly listed the SA200 as an application.  I've meant to get with Lincoln Customer Service to inquire about that but haven't done so yet.In absence of clarification of the above, it's my personal belief that properly seated brushes of the PN called for and originally provided is the way to go.On the idler board, Welder Parts Warehouse has a great price on theirs that carries a 2 year warranty so I would go with that.http://www.mcssl.com/store/4833177/sa250-idle-boardIs yours missing or not working?  I didn't go back to re-read your machine thread to see if you said one way or the other.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I contacted Lincoln to inquire regarding the NOS box of T-344 brushes Waggoner72 recently had and sold that clearly listed the SA200 as an application and the Service and Product Information Group respondent (whom I shall refer to as "Lincoln" as I did not request permission to identify him) acknowledged use of the T-344 brushes in the SA200 by some in both staggered and complete set arrangements "for many years" but also stated "To the best of my knowledge, we have never recommended using T344 brushes in SA-200 welders".Lincoln could only offer a guess as to why the NOS T-344 box would list the SA200 and stated "I have checked several older codes of SA-200 machines, even short hood electric motor and belt driven models, and every one I had checked used the T2687 brushes.  The T344 brushes were used for older 300 amp machines that were listed on the same parts pages".He also stated they did conduct tests in the past using different configurations of T-344 and T-2687 brushes "and did not see a noticeable improvement".  This coincides with the report that Bill Sellon (Bill's Welder Repair) made the same claim when asked about the subject and Lincoln added that "I do know that the factory specifications cannot be set properly with the T344 brushes".  This is completely understandable to me and I'm amazed how many have gone this route, expect the machine to fall within spec and then jack with the rack in an attempt to get it to. :diizy:Lincoln ended with "I have seen about every third commutator bar become slightly discolored when using T344 brushes but I have not heard of any permanent damage to the armature.".  I will end with based on the above response from Lincoln, if you feel using the T-344 brushes in conjunction with the T-2687 or as a complete set is the way to go that is your decision as would be rolling the rack rather than simply using the Shield-Arc dual controls as designed to control arc and puddle characteristics.  As both of the above can alter OCV and arc voltage they are in effect doing the same thing as adjusting the Fine Voltage Control up or down in a given gear.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
