"RIDGE" Vise

Does anyone have any opinions on RIDGE vises? Ive found an old one that I could get pretty cheap. Its probably only 4 or 5 inches, but its a BEEFY 4 or 5 inches lol. Its made here in Ohio, made in USA and looks to be really good quality. Are these good vises? Is ridge a good name? Id never heard of them until today. Reply:" Ridgid tools are great tools "Not really old Rigid stuff was USA made and great, go look at some of the Rigid stuff at Lowes and Home Depot...compressor, saws, etc; JUNK.I think they still make some good stuff like pipe vises, and threading machines, my local tool repair place hate some of the new Rigid stuff, Chinese made, low quality. My point is don't bank on the name, I think they make good tools and junk and thats for you to figure out.

Reply:if you can get it for a decent price, i'd buy it.  i paid $100 for the "heavy duty" larin vise at TSC and it is acceptable at best.  jaws are close to lining up, chinese made, you get the picture.
Reply:ridge and ridgid originated from the same parent company but are not the same in quality. ridgid is a brand distributed primarily through home depot. Ive heard from the mouth of a regional manager that home depot has alot of influence as to the way ridgid tools are made. It appears they are less focused on quality as they are on remaining competitive to the other common brands sold there.That being said, the ridge tool company is a different animal all together. Although now I believe even the  industrial stuff is listed under the ridgid brand website and name, its different quality stuff. pretty much all the plumbing and pipefitting stuff is heavy duty. Their jack stands, tri stands, chain vises and pipe threaders have been industry standards for decades. I beat the hell out of their stupid heavy pro press guns and unfortunately they still keep working (but the pro press guns take makita batteries so I guess that shows you they werent to confident in their own line of cordless batteries at that time) Ive seen ridgid threaders on the job that look like they came out of world war II. So I would say ridge vice: yes. Ridgid cordless drill: no. and ive used and own some of their powertools myself. not too impressed with them.Local 597
Reply:I believe I read that the Ridgid power tool line found in the likes of Lowes and Home Depot are manufactured by Emerson Elec.
