Hi guysI picked up a 302 stainless wire brush wheel for my bench grinder. I use one side of the grinder to grind tungstens and the other to... do nothing especially since I have a belt and disc sander now for beveling and squaring/deburring.I use the disc and belt sander to remove mill scale, etc., but want to use the stainless wire wheel to prep stainless tubing weld joints before I hit them with GTAW.Question is - is there a rule about using a brush/wheel on stainless and nothing else? Ie., could I use the wheel for aluminum as well? I won't use it for carbon steel. Thanks,JonMiller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:If you prep aluminum with it as well as plain steel, there may be some cross-contamination happening. With the little stainless, tooth brushes, it's easy to keep one separate for aluminum. Stainless to aluminum, might not contaminate so much as plain steel to aluminum, but.... ??City of L.A. Reply:Yeah I am more interested in whether I can use it on stainless and on aluminum. I won't use it on mild. I do have some manual brushes dedicated to aluminum. It'd be nice to not have to buy two wheels to avoid contamination though.Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:Usually high speed wire wheels tend to "smear" alum oxides on the surface rather than remove them. Also SS is usually fairly aggressive on alum when run at high speed..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:As DSW said the high speed would not be good for aluminum, the hand brush is quite easy. I do not brush stainless. The only thing I use the wirewheel for is deburring.Tim Beeker. |
