Hi all, recently found a mint square wave 175 for my hobby shop.  So far I'm coming along well, satisfied with my progress in steel.  I still need some work with Alumuninum. When I was shopping, I looked at the new Precision Tigs, thinking the Micro-Start and pulse technology would be a big step up from my basic 15yr old square wave.  But so far I have no issues with starting or cratering.  Is the micro start really better than my low tech Hi-Freq start? So in my mind, if I want to upgrade, I should skip the precision tigs and go all the way to the inverters - to get better AC control.  Walt
Reply:I can't answer your question as to the difference on the starts but I have the PT225 and it works very well. The Microstart which I believe is a improved HF start works prefect. I never used one of the old squarewave units but if you were planning on doing any aluminum of any thickness at all it would be nice to have teh extra amps. The older 175 amp units are pretty limited. Even the PT 225 isn't a power house when it comes to aluminum. As to inverter's, if money isn't a big problem, then I would be very tempted to go for one. They are much more portable and use 33% less power. Good luck on your decisionMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:I would have liked to have bought the PT 225, but my house electrical wiring setup was not up to it, I bought the V205-T AC/DC instead and am happy (although much poorer of course).Regards to all.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:God , i got my SquareWave tig 175 the year they came out......i think like 1994-95....seems like just the other day......SquareWave for Lincolns and SyncroWave for Millers was the  " BIG NEW THANG "  as far as technically advanced welders. Got mine at the show with the cart for $1800......i still watch my freinds weld beautifully with their OLD Mammoth Size TIG Dinasaur Machines and laugh to myself.....the new generation will be laughing at me..?        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3

Reply:I recently sold my stick welder and would love to replace it with a Lincoln 225 tig machine. I have been looking at both new and used machines other than the Lincoln to replace my welder. I've come close a couple of times of going for some of the older used outfits because as we all know money is a factor sometimes. On the new side I have looked at the Diversion, econotig, tigmate, and the new Hobart 165 tig unit. I can't help it but I keep coming back to this machine.I'm welding sheetmetal, light fab stuff and aluminum as part of my hobby. So my reason to save a few bucks is because it's a hobby right now. But if I needed to do the occasional job I feel this machine should do it. So I tell myself, self it might be more cash to shell out but you'll be getting more for your money. Right?
Reply:Talk to you Lincoln rep.  Sometimes, they have "motorsport" demo units that were sent to various nascar teams for use.  The units are used, but well cared for and I think Lincoln offers a 1 year waranty on them.  When I looked into it, The PT225 (ready pack) was around $1600!
Reply:i wouldent recomend anybody buing a new maching to consider anything less than 250 amps.
Reply:Not me, I'm still trying to wear out my '96 SquareWave255.Rex
Reply:I've got the PT185... Nice machine, but very limited for aluminum and thicker steel. If you are going to upgrade, I would suggest focusing more on machine output and duty cycle than what type of HF start it has.  If I were to upgrade, I would want something with considerably more umph, not more bells and whistles.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:I am a diehard lincoln fan, but I am curious as to why they made these machines with AC autobalance that you can't adjust.Sometimes you need to make slight adjustments and use tricks to achieve a certain weld. Don't the Millers have adjustable wave balance? Other than that, I say go lincoln. And make sure you get the power factor capacitor kit!!! This should be included instead of being an option.
