Is anybody familiar on the best way to clean the slip rings on these machines?The manual says not to try and clean them while it's running.
Reply:Fine sandpaper (320 grit or finer) or a commutator stone.Parts moving at 3600+rpm is the reason for the recommendation to not attempt cleaning slip rings with the engine running.  That being said, it's common practice that must be done with extreme caution.  Removal of the brush holder and brushes usually results in more working room.  Care should be taken to protect the brushes from shorting against the welder chassis or other metalic parts.Cleaning the slip rings with the engine off is done a section at a time by rolling the rotor/engine over by hand as you go.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:When I cleaned them on my G7, I used an ultra fine emory board, like what women use on their nail's, with a bit of contact cleaner sprayed on the emory, polished it right up and kept my hands away from the high speed spinning parts, after cleaning and shut the machine down, I sprayed them liberally with the electrical contact cleaner to make sure there wasn't any grit left!If you use an emory board, make sure to buy the professional brand, make sure its flat across, and get the finest grit possible, and use something to act as a lubricant for polishing like contact cleaner or even WD-40 works in a pinch, and use a light touch, your not trying to remove material, just polishing it.I always keep a few around in the garage for fine filing and cleaning uses!#1.
