Reply:Most on this forum of course use argon as a shielding gas, sometimes mixed with CO2 or helium. Some other subjects to research: It is also used in conjunction with mercury in neon tubing where it lights blue. Also florecent light tubes. Also used in insulated glass units. Do your research, find out why argon is used for these and let us know what you come up with.Last edited by metalman21; 01-15-2016 at 08:36 PM.

Reply:Its used in wine for preservative and possibly other foods. The ARGON laser has been around for a while also. Used for eye surgery and ARGON has multiple wavelengths including invisible UV.
Reply:Well there is almost 24 times more argon in the air we breath than Co2. Which in my mind makes Co2 insignificant.Breathing in pure helium will make your voice pitch high. Breathing pure argon will collapse your lungs permanently.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Breathing drive isn't caused by the lack of oxygen, but by an excess of CO2. If you breath in enough of a gas without O2 like argon or helium. you can cause the body's breathing reflex to "stall". The body won't recognize the need to breath since you haven't built up enough CO2 to trigger the breathing reflex. Mean time your body is starved for O2. You can test the body's reaction to excess CO2 by timing how long you can hold your breath. If you simply hold your breath and do nothing, the "need" to breath becomes more and more intense. If when you feel you must breath, you start to exhale, you will find you can hold your breath longer as you are decreasing the amount of Co2 in your lungs thus reducing that feeling that you have to breath. It's one of the key things they teach when learning to mix dive gases like trimix. Helium is usually put in the tanks 1st when partial pressure mixing because it's expensive and easier to cascade to low pressures. It's critical you make sure and mark cylinders containing only He, or immediately top with air or O2 so that the mix isn't lethal. There have been a number of documented cases where people will simply grab a cylinder, toss on a gauge and see it has something like 1500 psi in it, and either use it to test a reg, or use it for a quick dive, not realizing there is no O2 in the cylinder because it was in the process of being mixed for trimix. Once they displace all the O2 in their lungs, they will die unless someone helps them. Argon is worse since it's a heavier gas and isn't as easy to displace as He is.Balloon helium usually has air added to it so that people don't kill themselves if they inhale it. That's why it can't be used for welding..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
