Reply:I switched to taper taps for free hand tapping. I put them in some electric device, anything that will turn them, and just tap away. I also like gun taps but you can break those off. The taper taps just keep cutting and they just do not break. I get mine from my friend a machinist, he gets them with a six inch extension, It takes up the sudden binding and it just keeps cutting at rather high speeds. You do have to use sulfur-rated cutting oil.   I use gun taps in the auto thread-er.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormickLast edited by William McCormick; 11-08-2014 at 06:45 PM.Reason: Corrected spelling from "tapper" to "taper"
Reply:I made a quick movie so we can all be on the same page about taps. The taper tap in the movie is made to be driven into the work, you just power drive it right through steel, just like a gun tap. You do not stop and clear the bit.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:Very helpful. Thanks for the description.  I'm not sure I've seen a gun tap. How large can they get?Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:I really wanted to show them cutting, but I kind of ran out of time. We say blind taps, because we consider them for dead end holes or blind holes. But some people call a slight taper a plug tap, some call it a starter tap. But if we cannot run it right through without stopping to clear it, it is a blind tap or made for a dead end hole, to us. The one that I call the tapper tap, can be run right through steel. Because it only cuts a small amount at a time.  I found the gun taps up to 1" 8 TPI. These look like our gun taps, I do not use this brand though. http://www.amazon.com/Dormer-Powdere...5503119&sr=1-1Gun taps cut with the least resistance of all.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:The things I am calling taper taps are actually called nut taps if you want to order them from MSC. http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/04689089The price for the 1" 8 TPI is $272 Haha. I bet you can get them cheaper, but still that is an expensive piece. They do thread well though.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:I have been using gun taps since I was a kid, that would be about 45 years now. They are my favorite tap. And most machinists use them, because you need them with the auto thread-ers. You just put that in a drill press and it slows down the output spindle, it threads a hole, and if you set the stop on the drill press or just manually, stop lowering the drill press, the device switches into reverse at high speed and backs out the tap like lightning.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick

Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749Those heads are pretty nice. I've been using my mill to tap stuff since I got it 14 years ago. I don't have a head tho, I just put the tap in a drill chuck and feed it at the mills lowest speed (75 RPM). Of course, you have to have a mill with a spindle brake for the best performance.I've broken maybe one or two taps in the thousands of holes I've done since. I've done 3/4" holes with it, no sweat.

Reply:Here is that video of the nut verses gun tap. At about 450 rpm you get a really sweet thread. At 1700 rpm you get some imperfections from the gun tap. But you can see how both of those taps are extremely aggressive and require very little energy. That is why you always find the gun tap or the nut tap being used by machinists with a lot of holes to thread. I think the nut tap makes a little nicer thread. But I will be honest if you find the sweet spot the right rpm for each one, they are both great taps.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormickLast edited by William McCormick; 11-11-2014 at 06:02 PM.Reason: I used a wrong term in the movie I edited the text in the movie and put a new link to it
