today I was using a 6011 electrode and it began to smoke. I had the machine at 100 amps since the electrode kept sticking to the pipe that I was trying to weld. was this because the amps were too high? I'm still new at this stuff. thanks

Reply:rod was 3/32. guess it was too high. Thanks
Reply:lol, i'd think itwouldn't just be smokin, but probably be sagging cherry *** red limp half way through
Reply:Yeah, I've seen overheated 6011 turn to a dark brown and smoke. You can actually dip the rod in water when it does this.
Reply:when all else fails read the recommended amp settings on the side of the welding rod box
Reply:Did read the side of the box before discarding. but because the rod kept sticking, and using an inexpensive welder I purchased on ebay, thought maybe the machine was out of calibration while adjusting the amperage. thanks again
Reply:It could have been out of calibration, but if you were smoking the rods, my guess is it was not.Does your machine have any options aside from amperage? Changes to OCV, dig, or a few other settings can affect "stickiness" and possibly help without cranking the amps too high.

Reply:thanks for all the responses. i don't feel competent enough to start messing with the internals in this machine. will lower the amps and keep practicing. what is open circuit voltage? thanks
