After buying my used porta power I decided I needed a case to store/carry it in. I wanted something heavy duty that will take the abuse, but be light weight. I used some 1/8'' 6061 aluminum plate. The material cut and ready to be assembledTacked upTest FitWelded upDynasty 280 loving every bit of this aluminumHinge/top section weldedInside divider addedLatches/handle addedFinal test fitYa gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:Looks good but how heavy is it with the full kit? Mine weighed a ton
Reply:Your work looks nice but it is my experience that if those items are not fastened down inside that box, and if you handle the box often, in very short time just the weight of the pump and accessories will have that box looking like it tangled with a gorilla! Just my thoughts and experience. Best regards, Bob
Reply:This box is mainly for the pump and 1 or 2 cylinders. I have another toolbox that I keep all my accessories/cylinders in.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Very nice box, kinda made me cry a little when you painted it tho. . I just like the look of aluminum, but to each his own. . Reply:Nice looking box. Shouldn't it have been painted yellow with black lettering?
Reply:Yea I thought about that, but I didn't like the idea of an all bright yellow box.Ya gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:awesome build! i've been throwing around the idea of making a box similar to this, but to use as a case for a guitar. I think seeing this is enough motivation to make me actually go through with it. Great work!

Reply:If it were my torch I'd have the snake skin pulled all the way up to the bottom of the torch handle and wrapped with electrical tape to hold it there.

Reply:Looks good. My portapower came with a metal box, but I wish it were longer so I could leave it plugged into the primary cylinder without kinking the hose. Mine came with the packing material but most of it has disintegrated so it's probably a waste of time. Maybe I would just add more metal dividers like you did to hold the attachments. Found out the hard way that the duckbill spreader in the 10 ton kit is only rated for 1.5 ton... it won't take much pressure before the sides break. I'm slowly adding more short cylinders like you have. The muffin jacks I've seen only have a half inch stroke, so it's not much use in sheet metal that can flex that much.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:You are right that's why I always pay the extra for the cloth covered rubber hoses and tie the cover to the torch so it doesn't slip down like that. Of course when something falls on that expensive torch and cuts it your out more. But I think the cloth ones are worth the extra.Last edited by welderj; 11-20-2014 at 10:43 AM.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:That water cooled torch lead is pretty much the weak link in the system as far as things you have to pay close attention to so they don't get damaged and shut you down. I've been known to bark fairly loudly at others just for stepping on mine. Best thing I've found is to keep it off the floor as much as possible and roll it back up and hang it on the machine when ever you're not actually using it. It's not so bad if you're working in your own shop by yourself but even then you've got to pay close attention you don't do something stupid like get your chair wheels on it.
Reply:make some cardboard &duc tape dividers , make them to cradle the pistons , when they get to beat up make some new ones.It seems that oil and grease add life to cardboard.
Reply:Hmmmm.... or maybe just put some 90degree angles where you want the dividers, and pop rivet in strips of belting or heavy canvas for the divider. Non-abrasive, impact absorbing and it will outlast cardboard. I found the biggest issue was humidity when I didn't use the Portapower every day. Sitting under the bench one of the pistons got rusty and now refuses to seal.Last edited by whtbaron; 11-20-2014 at 10:23 PM.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes |
