i have just picked up a 1972 or 1973 sa 200 it starts right up runs great runs a grinder but wolnt weld it barely makes a spark. Does anyone know what could be the problem here? all of the brushes are in decent shape.  I have had a few pipeliners tell me if might be the shunt but i wanted to look further into the problem.  if you can help thanks
Reply:If it runs a grinder then it's safe to say the exciter output is good which should be 115vdc +/- at the auxiliary plug.Yes, it could be a bad shunt coil.  It could also be a bad or corroded fine current control (rheostat) if it has been sitting idle for a long period.Have you checked to make sure the main armature brushes are free?  The brush holders can get rusty enough to cause the brushes to hang up and not make contact with the commutator. If you're going to own an SA200, you need the free CD from Weldmart On-Line.  You can get one here: http://www.weldmart.com/index.htmMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:we have hooked up a new reostat from my father inlaws machine and removed all brushes and put them back still nothing
Reply:Does it have a remote switch? If  theres a bad connection or it's switched to remote and not plugged in you'll just get a sparkle.CWB InspectorRed Seal B PressureArguing with an Inspector is like mudwrestling with a Pig.After a while you realize the Pig likes it.
Reply:does not have remote switch
Reply:Bad connection on the rheostat?  If the mains are ok all thats left is the circuit board.CWB InspectorRed Seal B PressureArguing with an Inspector is like mudwrestling with a Pig.After a while you realize the Pig likes it.
Reply:The next step is to check the main generator shunt coils. There is a brown and a blue wire that goes into the main generator. Disconnect one of these which is attached to the rheostat and check with an ohmmeter across the brown and the blue wire. Should be around 54 ohms I believe. If it is open then the shunts will have to be replaced.Gary Haunemail  [email protected]  http://haunsystemsrepair.com
