I'm starting this thread as a place to put some of my work I do with my presses. As I get a chance to video or take pictures I'll post them here. Anybody else who has something they want to share that deals with presses are welcome to post them here as well.   I'm starting with a video I shot of me straightening a hay spear on my big press. This can be dicey sometimes since you never know how well they tempered the spear when they hardened it. Reply:Just more magic. Watching these videos is a learning experience for me. Thanks a lot.RegardsDave
Reply:Very nice workmanship Irish. I made Vee blocks for the frame rails and the ram, Makes that a much safer operation. Less chance of the piece you are working on going sideways.Mike
Reply:Irish as always I learn so much from you.  Keep up the great job.

Reply:Been there, done that, more times than I care to think.I made a couple of special ram noses (half-circles machined into the ends to fit the workpiece, so that it can't slip off) and sacrificial V-Blocks that lock between the  bed  rails, for this exact job.I had a spike kick out on me once and was lucky I was only bruised. That was enough incentive to get me making press parts to minimize some of the risk in doing this kind of stuff.
Reply:I've had a few things kick out. One reason I was standing well away from it. I actually figured this one would break while I straightened it. One of the reasons I didn't use some of my blocks is that I wanted to minimize the number of things flying through the air if it did break.  What I really need to do is redo the wiring and the switch on the press. I want a nice long remote pendant where I can get away from it when doing things I don't like.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:I have one of those spears that is banana shaped. I didn't have the guts to straighten it.  I'm surprised it didn't snap. Years ago I was hit in the forehead by a small part I was pressing. I thought I was a goner. Now I know why the CAT dealer has a cage around their press.

Reply:When I was a teenager I worked in a repair shop that had an old 50 ton press. We used to try to straighten bent deep tiller shanks on it until a couple broke and tried to go through the wall. Luckily nobody was hurt but they started refusing the shanks. Maybe you need a curved plexiglass screen off to one end using the press itself as your shield. That or do what they did, and quit playing with dynamite.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:If a cage around the machine would be in the way build a cage for you to stand in/behind. Kinda like "don't cage the shark, cage yourself". GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
