I have been looking at a bunch of table designs trying to figure out how I want to make mine and I noticed a lot of different casters used. So I wondered, what is the best casters for a weld table? I'm also trying to decide on the size, don't have a lot of room and it needs to be movable. I was thinking about 30" by 48", any input on size would be appreciated also.BigTee
Reply:If you have the room for it I would go at least 4x4 ft. It makes life easy having a nice square table. Chalk lines will make a quick grid for easy mock up on just about anything. Also I'd use a decent set of 3-4" all steel castors. Easy to roll and will last for ever. What materials are you planning to use for the table.?Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:Probably 2" and 1 1/2" square tubing. I can get a pretty good deal on it. Haven't located any plate yet, but I'm looking for 3/8" or 1/2"BigTee
Reply:I'm not a fan of welding tables on casters. I like to beat and bend stuff on them. Casters are just too wobbly to do that on. A used pallet jack can be had for what you will spend on good quality casters. Keep a few pieces of 1/8" rubber handy to throw down on the floor under the feet if your slab isn't level and it will sit tight and solid. You'll find all sorts of handy uses for the pallet jack.As for size - go as big and heavy as you can afford.
Reply:Check Northern Tool, they have a good selection of steel casters and a very good price. I have used a couple of sets. their house brand.Thermal Arc 210 - Tweco 211I - Cutmaster 52
Reply:I got several sets of 5" casters with brakes and weld on plates from castercity.comThey were 148 bucks for 4 including plates and would buy them again. My welding cart weighs 600lbs with welders and gas bottles and you can move it with your finger tips. Same for my 2X5 table with 3/8" top....They lock in place solid with no wobble.Go at least 5" cause they roll over stuff like grit and debris really easy...Also suggest all 4 swivel so it is really easy to maneuver around in tite places.Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 11-20-2014 at 10:04 PM.

Reply:i think this is the best way to go for sure but also have alot of holes in it like the build pro table. And it more easy to transport the smaller plates when buying or taking it to the water jet guy. U need to be able to get clamps all over. This is what I'm gona do when I have a spare 1000 dollars + but 4x8 or 5x10.
Reply:Mine have large cast steel wheels with sealed bearings and super hard red poly tires. The upper swivel bearing is greasable. Casters of this quality offer full range of replacement parts and they never change inventory.Just google "weld on caster plates" if you want to shop plate prices. They all use the same sizing conventions/bolt hole locations.I located the plates by calling castercity. Really hard to find on their site otherwise.

Reply:http://www.footmastercasters.com/Expensive but good for when you only occasionally want to move.  Not good for going over leads etc though.  Can take a pounding when raised too
Reply:Depending on what your doing on table reflects type and size. IF you are gonna be doing some heavy pounding , leave heavy weight on it steel casters would be a must. IF just  hobby work rubber ones would be fine. Is this going to be on concrete ? Solid flat surface ? Dirt or gravel ? If you use a large 8'' diameter caster your uprights for table leg will be shorter and will reflect totally material length while smaller casters will use a little more steel. If that is a issue. As for size that to is based on use. A 30'' x 48 '' , 48'' x 48 '' , or 36 ''x 60''. I would locate the top plate first. You may find a cutoff or drop piece that is a odd size, like 33'' x 57'' , 40'' x 46 '', or something. This may cost less then a even size. Depends on how critical and fussy you are. Here's a good photo illustrated build of a 36'' x 60 '' table by one of our female members, Equilibrium's .http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-welding-table
Reply:Locking 6" wheel work best, they need to be able to roll over things strung across the floorLONGEVITY 250EX w/ 25' weldcraft cs310 torchTorchmate w/ Hypertherm powermax 85   withFLASHCUT CNC PRO SERIES CONTROLS
Reply:Here is what I did for castors on the table that I built.  They are 6" and I added the adjustable feet on the corners for the reason Pipeliner stated.  Ebay is the best place to get high quality castors on the cheap.
Reply:I am going to build a table this weekend as well, have a 4'x5'x5/8" plate I picked up for scrap price.  I plan to use 2 steel casters on the back of the table, and rigid legs in the front.   If i need to pull the table out, from the wall for full access,  I'll pick up the front with a floor Jack and move as needed.  Actually going to make the table to use 4 casters,  but will make bolt on legs for the front, with leveling bolts,  so I have the option in the future to use 4 casters if desired. The intent is to have a semi movable table that I can put some force on and still remain mostly stationary.   .Last edited by Teggy1; 11-21-2014 at 08:44 PM.
Reply:I will just be using the table for small projects and plan on making a few things for the tractor. I do have a garage, 24' X 48', with concrete floor. I'm thinking to go 4'X4' or like you said BD1, I'll go with what I find. Ordered a set of casters from Castercity with the weld on plates, 5" polyurethane on aluminum. Looking for a piece of plate now. 2" and 1 1/2"tubing is ordered.BigTee
