Needed DOT Certs ?

I have more and more customers wanting repairs, modifications made to various size trailers and utility truck hitches, etc..... I hold several welding certifications but not sure what certification the DOT requires to do said work. I had a new client ask me today for a copy of what ever certification the DOT requires. Reply:As far as I know here in NY, Yhere is no cert required. As long as there are no cracks you can put it together with super glue. I would think though that D1.1 would be more than sufficient for a cert. Just my opinion though. Not sure what N.C. would require.

Reply:Yes.. just did some research, found the NC DOT weld cert site. Appears they only require cert on bridge work or any thing that carries traffic. I sent an email about trailers and hitches...waiting on reply. Reply:One thing to think about is that getting that will open some more doors. I am NYS DOT certified for bridge work. It does  open more doors elsewhere. Something I forgot to mention is  check on what it takes to keep that once you get it. Here in NY you have to have a signature from a PE,CWI or an EIC once every six months to keep it up.Last edited by theweldor; 01-26-2016 at 08:55 PM.

Reply:i do work for a pretty formal co. vehicles/trailers that go through BIT and DOT inspections.     They want my d1.1 ,  needs to be current.    I'm not allowed to modify anything, or patch over anything, no fish plates, no adding gussets, etc.    i'm allowed to weld over a crack as many times as i want though, i can build up 15 welds stacked high on thin material, and thats ok though, as long as no cracks are visible.    anyway, no modications from factory specs.     whether this is DOT law, or the Co's policy i work for, i don't know, i just follow the rules i'm given.

Reply:yes, and there workers do jackknife them.    there most popular screw up, is not raising the landing gear enough, and they hit stuff, and sometimes tear up the attached cross-member.    When i replace a tongue, i wish i could go to a  slightly heavier tube wall, but cant.    these trailer mfg use the lightest stuff they can.   my billing invoice needs to detail what i did, and is filed w/ vehicles maintnanace/repair records, which is made avaialble to the inspectorLast edited by 123weld; 01-29-2016 at 08:46 PM.

Reply:the weldor, just curious, if your bridge is smaw,  what rod/dia did you use, and what type/grade were test plates, and what is aws spec #?Last edited by 123weld; 01-29-2016 at 10:44 PM.

Reply:SMAW is all that is allowed for field work here. The test is according to the NYS Steel construction manual. It is available for the DOT website. You can Use either 1/8 or 5/32  7018 for rod. The test plates are 1" A36. Forgot to add. The EIC is the person in charge on the states side of the job. I am not sure if the need to be a PE or not. Reply:thanks.   I got a bridgecert in CA, and caltrans wanted a AWS D1.5 w/  7018H4R , i did mine 5/32.  test plates were A572.         it says AWSD1.1/D1.5 at bottom.    i only had one bridge job, which was only column casings, i went through all the efffort to get this cert.    when i showed up for the job, it was some little oriental caltrans inspector that didn't know anything about welding, he called over the aws inspector, i  handed him my D1.1, and was looking and digging for my 1.5, and the inspector hands me back my d1.1, and says, go for it.     huh, all that work and 600 dollars to hear that, gosh
Reply:I have my 1" unlimited SMAW dot in CT. Was the same test as the AWS but not aloud to use power tools (such as grinder) on weld test. Supersedes AWS but I have that as well.Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
