Reply:Stainless wire brush on small pneumatic angle grinder. Just playing because it didn't really matter what it looked like but was testing for gun cabinet I want to make for myself. If paint doesn't stick to aluminum without metal etching primer then I figured clear coat wouldn't stay put. But while I type this I just realized I etched it more than the primer ever could have and the paint probably would stick.... ThanksSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I like the look of aluminum when finished with a 60-80 grit sandpaper on a da sander. I only have a picture of some steel but aluminum looks similar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:If you paint or clear coat over Aluminum the best way is to remove the oxide layer like you did with the wire wheel and put the finish on asap. If it sits over night before you put the finish on you need to do it over. I found this out by accident on some aluminum steps boards on the side of my truck so my wife could clime in easier. The factory paint pealed off about a year and a half after I put them on. I took them off and sand plasted them and repainted them silver right away. That was about 10 years ago. The paint is still on and it has not tried to peal at all. Even were my boot cuffed the paint off it has gotten no worse than what my boot did. I have done similar with other things since and the paint stays on exellent. The only problem I would have with putting a finish on a table is that to use it for a welding table the finish would insulate the ground and anytime you slide anything it will scratch through the finish. I would leave it as is if it were mine.
