Hello to allMy neighbor has a 10,000 lb rock breaker. We are doing some road repair and that mean clearing some of the rocks in the road. Since the equipment he's gotten in auction are not the best kept I am helping to get them usable. The hammer on this unit is a 5" round hammer we are cutting it at a 45* and hard facing it. I have ask the local welder supply house and they are not so forth coming with a rod recommendation. The Rock is granite and that is all were going to be using the hammer for. Could any of you help in recommending a proper rod to build the face?  What is a proper procedure to do this?Boyd
Reply:http://victortechnologies.com/stoody/Try not to pass out when you see the price for that stuffWhen i do this for a client...I make them buy the rod or wirebecause it's always a special order and that also means pay up front...Last time i bought some stoody for my own use it was $90.00 for 10 LBSLast edited by killdozerd11; 02-05-2016 at 11:38 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I like to use Lincoln Wearshield ABR. Very tough stuff.Make sure you find a proper buildup rod, don't just use 7018 as it doesn't have the metallurgical properties of a true buildup rod. The purpose behind the buildup rod is twofold; obviously it builds up the worn surface, but it also acts as a medium between the base metal and the hard surfacing rod. Wearshield ABR is in the 100,000psi tensile strength range. It doesn't adhere particularly well to mild steel that's in the 35-50,000 range. It can just be peeled off like a scab with enough force. A buildup rod gives a higher strength surface for the hard facing rod to adhere to. For the actual hard facing, here is the proper procedure. The purpose behind the design is that it helps trap dirt, so that the actual surface isn't being worn down so much. Use a very long arc length to get it to build up and get ropy. You should be able to watch big globules fall off the end of the rod and on to the base metal. Ugly is good. The boxes should be no smaller than 1"x1", and no bigger than 2"x2" for the best capability to trap dirt.Last edited by Hillbilly Welder; 02-06-2016 at 11:52 AM.
Reply:Both Lincoln & Stoody have literature to download for free.http://victortechnologies.com/stoody...iterature.htmlhttps://marcomcentral.app.pti.com/du...ery=hardfacing---Meltedmetal
Reply:You might check and see what the breaker manufacturer recommends.  My hammer is an NPK and they do not suggest hardfacing.  If you wish to retip the point, they suggest grinding or milling only, no heat processes.  I have read a lot of breaker points are 1075 steel.Hard facing alloys range from super hard for abrasive wear to super tough for heavy impact.  I think you need something in the heavy impact catagory.Last edited by bent; 02-06-2016 at 09:27 PM.
Reply:Wow that is beautiful! Thank you for your input. It looks like I have a lot of home work to do.
Reply:Thank you for your input I will look up the manufactures specs on the hammer. I know the old one snapped off and the rest of the hammer was too bent to repair.
