Guys, I'm still new at all this welding stuff...Hobby welder here. I had the chance to try my hand at aluminum the other day. Welder was a Trailblazer 302 engine-driven. In the spool gun I was running .045 wire at 20.6 volts (not sure of the wire speed). The coupon is 1/4 inch 4043 (I think). This was run in the flat horizontal position.I was able to run about 8 beads and I got better every time. Comments, critiques, advice solicited.
Reply:Looks like you have a fair amount of undercut on both legs in places. Also I don't care for how wide the spacing is in your cycles. The toes are real jagged. If you were doing circles, I'd try and do 2 or 3 times ( if not more) the number of circles you are currently doing per inch and see how that works. That may also deal with your undercut that I'm seeing. I usually don't run wire that large the few times I do alum mig. Voltage seems pretty low though. That's in the range I usually run .035 steel in short arc and alum mig runs best in spray typically. I'd think you need to be up several volts. The chart on my desk from the MM 252 shows 23.5v 390 IPM using 4043 .045 wire for 1/4" alum..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Aluminum with a spool gun is really hot and fast. It really comes down to practice. Agreed that 24 volts give or take would be more the ball parkTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Thanks much guys. I did notice the undercut and comment to the guy that was allowing me to use his gear. I hope to have another chance this week give it another shot. So, a few more volts and smaller circles i should see less undercut and smoother weld toes. I'll post another photo if I get another short at it this week. Thanks again.
Reply:Here are a couple more. I think the toes are better but my movement has not seemed to improve. Thoughts? |
