Had an issue with water in my airlines so I built this..Works quite well and is portable so it can go to a job site. There is a valve at the bottom so the tank can be easily drained. I used a tank from a pressure sandblaster that I no longer use..the air enters at about a quarter of the way down from the top and the air is taken off at the top of the tank.Sam
Reply:How much does the air cool down between the compressor and that dry tank? Cooling the air is the key to removing moisture from it.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I'm trying to remember exactly how those HF type sand blasters are plumbed. The top pipe connection may be there, but I'm pretty sure the side one isn't.To me this has "BOMB" written all over it. If you want to see what happens to someone when a pressure vessel lets go, ask Mike how his hand is...http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...old-compressorThis isn't the type of project that someone without special training and skills should be attempting. The risks of this rupturing are real and the results can be catastrophic. The risks just don't out weight the savings..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:First place if one does not feel that they can do a good job on a project then don't do it. the tank in question does have a pressure relief valve on it, came that way. Secondly when one is trying to get a air dryer to work the main thing is to have enough area of cool metal to cool the air and allow moisture to condense. some guys use a long  run of metal pipe to achieve this and i use the "knockout tank" for this purpose. the other thing to consider is "latency" does the air have time to set and condense in what whatever cooling system is used. If the condenser is too small the air does not have time to dry out before it reaches your tools. In addition I use a small inline desicant dryer on the outlet of the tank to give me an indication of moisture getting through the tank. The tank as shown is working for my little one man shop just fine and no worries ab out safety as I gave it an over pressure test before placing it in service..Thanks for your inputSam
Reply:http://www.harborfreight.com/15-gal-...ter-69724.htmlI know guys that take portable air tanks, and put a 2" pipe with ball valve in them for use as a bead seater.  Same deal.  I'd be afraid to do it, but they do seem to work.Speaking of which.........I have a  http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200465525_200465525?cm_mmc=Aggregates-_-Shopping-_-Automotive>Tire Equipment-_-19574 that has some pretty lousy factory welds, so go figure.  The knockoffs are going for about $100 on Ebay.  Probably not any worse made."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I've always had refrigerated air dryers in the shops as clean, dry air prolongs any air tool service life. They work very well and are not expensive to operate or maintain. Mentioning the tire bead seater: I've seen several of those made from semi truck and trailer air tanks which work well. Factory produced air receiver tanks meeting DOT standards are much better in quality than the offshore produced ones seen prolific these days.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
