I was cutting some 1/2 x 1 1/2 bar stock today with my porta band and my buddy that was in the shop said I needed a chop saw. He reminded me that he still has my old delta miter saw up at his house from like 10 yrs ago when he did his addition. Wondering if I could change the blade and use it for cutting stuff for my projects. Im just learning how to weld, 99% of the stuff I cut is 1/4 or less, mostly angle and bar stock. Reply:Standard wood cutting miter saws don't hold up weel to metal cutting for the most part. Metal cutting carbide blades are designed to be run at much lower RPM's. These saws also don't hold up to a diet of abrasive blades either. The dust kills the motors and the plastic parts don't fare well with the hot metal bits and sparks. Also note that these saws don't have any type of clamp, making them very dangerous if you try to use them to cut metal. If you want to destroy that saw, go ahead and cut steel with it. Almost everyone I know who tried this, killed their saw in very short order..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:DswI got to looking at the blades for it and they dont seem to be in the same rpm range. Well I tried, guess it will sit in his shop for a few more years, LOL ThanksLearning one rod at a time

He has stuff here I have stuff there, we live on the same street and our families have been friends since I moved here, lol so I feal safe. I saw a post about someone using a steel max saw, looked kinda cool. I think for now Ill stick with my porta band. I did see at an auction one time someone had one mounted so you could pull it down like a miter saw.Learning one rod at a time |
