I called a guy in NH tonight about some parts that were listed on Craigslist for and SA 200 he told me he was working a power house job and the bearing on the water pump let go and the fan took the radiator. He said the machine was running fine other than that. They opted to buy a new machine as this one was old. Old as in all copper. Into the dumpster it went , good f163 and all . Could not be removed from the job site . I told him what I needed as he had taken a few quick parts but not what I wanted. He went back to the site today and it had been buried with scrap Iron. Good fuel tank, doors , all the good stuff with it. All for a radiator job. I don't understand the thinking some times."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:In 1967 I was fresh out of the 11th grade for summer vacation. My Uncle got me a "Union job" working construction in Western New Mexico. (I live in Eastern NM) I was hired in the gate of a job just finishing up building a refinery for a copper mine. I was a "swamper" and my job was to stand in the rear view mirrors of a 2 ton flatbed truck and back him up with hand signals. Laborers and/or a cherry picker loaded the truck and I rode from location to location getting out only to back the driver up. Mostly we were hauling trash and piles of "unused materials" to the dump, a couple of acres of deep ditches used to dump, crush (running D9 dozers over it) and cover up the "material." The material consisted of mostly junk and trash like most industrial construction sites of this caliber generated at the time. Towards the end of the summer before I had to go back to school they got serious with the stuff going into the ditches which had moved several times to different 2 acre plots. Gang boxes full of tools relating to various disciplines, saws, sanders, grinders, lathes, drill presses, oxy-acetylene bottles with the carts, hoses, gauges and torches attached, and many, many SA200 Lincoln Red Faced welders. Why?? We were told the next job was in Montana and it was cheaper to throw it away and destroy it than it was to truck and ship it!! Lots of cherry pickers were sitting machines and gang boxes full of tools over the fence on waiting pick ups after hours, but most of it was destroyed. I've never gotten over that. Why couldn't they sell or auction it off??Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:Still happens to this day. About 10 months ago, a local fabricating/maintenance company that only does large industry, i.e. refineries, auto manufacturing, "re-organized" their main shop. My buddy that works there was sick from what they had to throw out. Shop foreman & upper management standing to be sure nothing left out side of dumpster. 14 hole saw kits, complete 10 piece kits, because 1 or 2 saws missing or damaged. gas powered chop saw that needed a muffler. in total almost 3 tons of tools. nothing escaped the dumpster
Reply:Anybody from a management point of view care to explain why the tools have to leave in the dumpster and not be given to someone who may want them? Is it on federal jobs to eliminate any hint of theft or impropriety. Don't have time to be fooling with this stuff on co. time? What is the reason for them being so adamant about stuff having to go in the dumpster.?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:Our company does the same, hundreds of engines, tooling etc all gets the dumpster, some even brand new. Employees used to be able to get a disclosure slip and take home what they wanted. Thanks to our legal system that all came to an end, as well as it did around the nation. In one word, liability. Our legal system has made it so that the company is liable for damage or injury caused by failed equipment equipment that they own, or used to own. The only safe legal route for them is to declare it "scrap" and that means a paper trail saying it physically went to the scrap yard. Once it is "scrapped" the company is free of liability. Its just part of the larger problem in this country where people hold everyone else liable for something that happens to them, from coffee burns at Mcdonalds, to cutting fingers off when clearing out your mower while its running. Its sad and a waste, but truthfully I cant blame the company for doing it. Same problems are in vehicle safety, product safety, healthcare, etc etc.

Reply:I'll guess that the company can write it off. Not all bad though, as it means MANY more equipment sales for suppliers! The trick would be to find out which scrapper is hauling off the lot (in advance) and cut a deal.
Reply:I fail to see what the problem is. If I buy something, I figure it's my right to treat it how I wish, do whatever I want with it, whether or not a bunch of more "enlightened" guys think they know better.

Reply:Its gotta have something to do with the progressive mindset that has infected our country for the last 100 years. The more wasteful the government is, the quicker they (government) can run this country into the ground and establish a communist "utopia." It took us at least 100 years to get here and it will take at least that to get out. The reset button is about to be pushed. |
