Aluminum welding in coast guard ships?

Is aluminum used as structure in Shipyards? What Aluminum is being welded in tow boats and coast guard type ships? Looking to transfer jobs. Thanks
Reply:Pretty sure the CG doesn't have the budget to build large stuff out of aluminum, and the small stuff is all overgrown RHIs these days. On the other hand, you can still find a lot of it in railings and other subassemblies. Reply:i have always used a spoolamatic mig when welding a lot of aluminum. you can lay a lot of bead fast but you need a lot of amps

Reply:The navy likes alum for a number of reasons. It lightens the weight of the hull allowing an increase in fuel efficiency and thus increases range of operations. Biggest though is that it lowers the center of gravity in the hull making it more stable. This is critical especially with all the new electronics and radar often positioned high in the super structure, all adding to a higher chance the ship can capsize due to the rise in CG.They've taken the weight savings even farther in some of the newer experimental vessels that are now all alum. However they are finding out what most people already know, that salt water and alum don't really play well together. The higher and faster rate of corrosion is causing some major issues that they are having to try and find solutions to..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
