I was reading the labels on both 7018MR, and 7018-1MR. One says it's "all position", the other "out of position". What's the difference and why? Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Just looking in the Lincoln welding consumables product catalog, 2010 C1.10, pages 69 & 70 regarding Excalibur 7018 -A1 MR, its the only entry listed for it.  It states "welding positions" "all except vertical down".  Just my two cents.  Best regards, BobHold the press's,  page 45 & 46, Excalibur 7018 MR, same welding positions "all except vertical down".  Also can be had in diameters up to 1/4", unlike -A1 MR only goes to 5/32".  BobLast edited by rhunt; 11-01-2014 at 09:05 AM.

Reply:Originally Posted by SlobThanks, I couldn't reason that out myself. I'm ordering up six Lincoln 50# containers of 5P, 5P+, and 7018, but was undecided on which 7018 to use. These will be 3/32, and 1/8 in each variant. The welding store stocks ESAB rods but the Lincoln products garner such positive praise I'm going to go that route. In your two or three weeks welding experience, which of the Lincoln products do you prefer in the 7018 line?

Reply:The latest from Lincoln is millenium arc. Runs pretty nice.
Reply:I'm using my antique G-258 Hobart commutator machine predominantly. I still have and plan to use the G-213 which is the same commutator based type but the former is on running gear and easier to hitch up and go. I've never had, nor used anything newer. Still no news on the red face machine in the barn although it is still there. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I've ran them all. The Excaliber 7018 is the tops. Nicest Rod there. Most expensive also.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:To answer your original question, the difference between 7018 and 7018-1 is that 7018 is CVN tested at -20F, and 7018-1 is tested at -40F. Thus better for structural steel in cold areas. The 7018-A1 referenced in a couple of posts is different, it contains Molybdenum and is mostly used for high-strength pipe.Personally I like both Excalibur and Atom Arc Acclaim but not the old Atom Arc. The operative word is "personally": it depends on your machine, technique, etc.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Probably referring to the numbers on the rod. I have some newer ones with black numbers and the ones over a year old had red.
Reply:xcaliber has it's purposes, but if I could only have one, it would be Lincolns LH-70 7018.   I have less porosity on my starts, and it has lil more penetration then xcal.     It's more expensive, but for repairs, I never use xcal.
Reply:I run Excalibur MR. Was bored and decided to try some Hobart, Didn't like it, had to run it waay hotter to wet out. I have ran a little Atom Arc, not enough to say if I like it more or less than Excalibur. One job provided Bohler 7018 and I really enjoyed running that. I have run a lot of 5p+(grey) and 5p(red) but can only notice a small difference. What are you guys paying for 50 pounds of 3/32 Excalibur? Reply:I've use pretty much only excalibur. I got stuck using atom arc on a 3g welding test and I found it didn't burn back as I switched sides of the root quite as well as excalibur did.IW Local 580 NY, NY

Reply:I think the brand of rod and machine makes a difference. Excalibur is good. I like the new esab better. In my opinion the best 7018 isBöhler. It is pricey but is a great rod.
Reply:Never have heard of that brand; Bohler. I'll ask about it too.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Robert. I use a Vantage 300. And a pipeliner 200gI run my vantage in the downhill pipe mode. I set my arc force on the low side for 7018. The pipeliner is my welding partners. They both like the esab and böhler better. We do use a lot of Excalibur and it runs nice just doesn't seam to be as smooth. But that's just two guys opinions. We build natural gas chillers sometimes and they company will only let us use böhler rods on those. Not sure why.Last edited by specopswelder; 11-02-2014 at 10:05 AM.
Reply:Thanks specopswelder, I ask because I run an inverter machine, a Dynasty 280 and I find the Excalibur run a little better. Uphill vertical the slag just peals but not so much for the Bohler, in fact I have to power wire wheel to get the slag to let go. I wonder if it's because of the way the inverter runs. Ill have to test it out on my Idealarc and see how it runs. Im sure they demand the bohler because their engineer did their due diligence with the engineering specs on the bohler rod. I know each rod has enough of a personality I have to tweek it a bit to get it to run like I expect. Thanks.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:Yeah rods do tend to have personalities. I notice that from lot to lot that I have to tweak little things to get it like I want. For most things I doubt that some guys care or notice a difference. When you are going through lots of rodThe little things do matter. I would be curious as to how the  ideal arc likes it over the other.

Reply:My hat is off to you Stick-man, My welds look like bird poop with the red rod. Grew up with it, and made the best of it, but the 5P+ is a perfect stack of dimes on my inverter. I'll run some bohler today on the lincoln beast and see what turns up.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler

Reply:Haha that pic is the ticket. I have noticed that some brushes are better than others. I use Walter stringer bead brushes. I like Walter as the brush seams to wear down instead of breaking off as much. 7 inch notSure that matters tho.
Reply:When referring to Linc 7018R the R is "resistant" as in moisture resistant. It might not code but it handles-stores better in moist environments. Our little hillbilly shop keeps it in a refrig with a light bulb so everyone here buys from them a kilo or 2 at a time.Overnight in the rainforest will eat up an electrode so better to go by the hardware every day and grab what you need. They sell about 6-8 boxes a week so you go grab a kilo and it's very fresh and not too hard on the wallet. The hardware dude is a real fair guy.I store mine in my cupcake oven. The oven gets used every day and whassherface knows to..... ummmmmmm put the rod back in the box when its still nice and hot.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
