About to remove the backing strap. Then the bend test. Wish me luck.
Reply:Good luck!
Reply:I wish you the best of luck. I'm not terribly impressed by what I'm seeing at the toes of the cap on both sides though. I can't tell if there is undercut or not, but the edges look pretty rough. Might just be the lighting from the flash as that often can play tricks with what you see in the pictures. You still do need to work a fair amount on your consistency. Some areas like on the lower left look like they need a lot of work. I'm also thinking that this could probably have been run a tad hotter. I don't like how some areas look. Again it might just be the contrast from the flash..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Good luck!!!!! What thickness of metal is that? Why so many beads. When I buy or make a press I'm going to make a bend tester attachment for it. Maybe u can do the same so u don't have to take it somewhere every time
Reply:Good Luck, You need to Grind or sand those welds until they are the same thickness as the metal and then cut them into Coupon strips 1/2" or 3/4" is fine and then do your bend testLast edited by Gerry1964; 12-02-2014 at 02:08 PM.
Reply:Gerry,You say your plates should be ground flush on both sides, then cut into coupons? From what I understand, you should cut your coupons out, and just grind the coupons flush? What's the different reason for doing it one way, over the other?JohnJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. It wasn't until I actually started to really learn to weld that I realized how little I had actually known, but thought I did. I think that's often why newer welders get offended at comments by older more experienced hands. The new guys just really don't realize how ignorant and uninformed they actually are at that point. They want to think that they now know what they are doing when in reality they know very little and it's obvious to those who really do.

Reply:Thought you guys might wanna see the process of my vertical MIG bend test. My instructor just did a visual inspection of my 7018 horizontal. He told me the crack on the one piece was the result of me grinding it the wrong direction. Attached Images
Reply:Ya that sounds right because you made a bunch of stress risers. U need to bring it to more of a fine finish then it won't matter. Just like if you put a scratch in a piece of glass it is more likely to break where the scratch is. Same thing goes with polishing connecting rods in motorsLast edited by motolife313; 12-05-2014 at 10:12 PM.

Reply:james,You need to put a little more care in to prepping your coupons before bending them.   Using a grinding rock is fine for removing the bulk of the re-enforcement but I like to finish up with a 36 grit flapper disc.   And the grind marks should run in the direction the coupon is being bent.   Another way of saying this is to say that the grind marks run transverse to the direction of the weld.   Also you don't want to leave a sharp square corner on your coupon in the area where it will be bending.  Use a flapper disc or file to put up to an 1/8" radius on the edges.Last edited by HT2-4956; 12-06-2014 at 11:53 AM.
Reply:Another example of some correctly prepared coupons.
Reply:Don't mean to hijack the thread but what size do you make the coupons before welding?
