Hey guys,  looking for a cleaner I can use on my welder and CNC plasma table.  Preferably something I don't need to rinse off as I can't get to some areas without disassembly.   I know the effects of chlorinated brake cleaners with welding and want to avoid any issues.   I was considering using the CRC QD Electronics cleaner as it evaporates quickly without a residue.   I checked the MSDS - http://www.crcindustries.com/faxdocs/msds/5101.pdf and can't find anything about chlorine based chemicals and didn't see anything else alarming.   It contains - Naphtha (petroleum), hydrotreated light 1,1-Difluoroethane n-Hexane 2,2-Dimethylbutane 2-MethylpentaneCan you guys take a look and comment on the safety for this in a welding/plasma cutting environment?   I would expect to use it on the gantry, wires looping through the tracks, etc.. components on the torch, but not the consumables..Thanks
Reply:Yeah, that's fine, but oh so expensive compared to carb cleaner.
Reply:91% isopropyl alcohol is inexpensive and does a great job cleaning electronics unless heavily soiled with grease. A spray bottle and clean, lint free cloths work well. It is also great for finding minor flesh wounds not even known about.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:Acetone is too. A good replacement for the slightly slower drying solvent in the cleaner from the OP is Coleman fuel.  In liquid, these are really cheap. But in aerosol can form, I still believe that carb cleaner is the best option.
Reply:Coleman fuel is white gasoline. I'd personally look for a safer alternative.Eventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication".  P.S. I edit almost every post because because I'm posting from my phone and my fingers sometimes move faster than my brain.

Reply:Thanks guys.  Is carb cleaner generally safe for plastic and electrical connections?  One of the things I'm looking to clean most is the plasma machine torch on my CNC table.  It get's filthy from the water table splashing up.  And most of the torch is made of a hard plastic.  It also has wires and contact connections.  I'd definitely be happy with something cheaper.   Just don't want to warp the torch or leave oil residue behind.   A torch would be a lot more expensive.
Reply:The only thing in the MSDS for the QD that looks suspicious is the 1,1-Difluoroethane which is a halogenated hydrocarbon that can break down into toxic chemicals when exposed to the arc. Not as bad as chlorinated brake cleaner but similar. CRC also makes non-chlorinated brake cleaner which is safe from a toxicity standpoint but flammable.Personally I prefer the CRC "Throttle body and air intake cleaner" which is a bit more expensive but a better solvent and also free of chlorinated solvents. It is important to note that no organic solvent will remove the crud splashed up onto your torch by the water table. Clean water is the best for that purpose.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
