I build a lot of marinas and parts for them.  In the past I have always just used Rustoleum damp proof primer for prime and finish, one coat.  Well, it's not legal in Ca anymore. Anyone have a good recommendation for a one coat system, DTM, with no need to top coat for fresh water marina parts? I'm not looking for 2 part paints, just a DTM primer that doesn't need a top coat. I was calling around today and was recommended Devoe 4306, but haven't used it. Another recommendation was Krylon, but I don't know the part## on that one.
Reply:What about por-15?http://www.por15.com/TOP-COAT_p_102.htmlI have only used their Motorcycle Tank Kit, but it was top notch.Found this stuff, and put it in the shopping cart with a CA address, and it didn't say it couldn't be shipped to CA, so I guess you would be good.Good Luckkidtigger24  They think I’m crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD!
Reply:For a lot of projects that looks good, however the docks I build are basically a red iron primer, but one that can be left as a finish coat.  Rustoleum rusty metal or damp proof primer worked great and was about $60 a gallon.  They don't allow it in CA though.  It's crazy, everytime I find a perfect paint syatem in CA the next time I go to the industrial paint store it's illegal here. They are pushing a water based Krylon 1100 or an oil based Krylon 250 at all the welding stores.I might just have to drive two hours to Reno and pick up what I'm used to, but I'm sure I will have to find aa substitute soon.

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWThat was going to be my suggestion. Possibly stock up while you can if you know you use enough of it in a year or so to make it worth while. It might even pay to contact the manufacturer about shelf life for "long term" storage so you have an idea how long you can keep the stuff before it goes bad.
Reply:Has anyone had experience with sherwn williams DTM alklyd enamel B55 (oil based) or B66 (water based) paints?  I have never used water based industrial paint, but environmental laws seem to be headind in that direction. I am a little leary of a water based paint.

Reply:Yeah, even our ADA rules are different, the inspectors don't know the rules, nor is there an actual book.  I think they actually voted to go back to normal ADA recently.  I was showing them simpler marina designs for access which they actually copied and made code for the changing enviroment due to lake levels.  We definately must have much more handicapped people with different needs than the rest of the country! Reply:The Sherwin Williams alkyd dtm is good stuff! A guy I work for that builds boat docks introduced me to it and that's what I use now. The waterbased dtm is crap, you can scratch it off with your fingernail.
Reply:Sherwin williams told me the oil based stuff won't be around in CA much longer, they were pushing water based.  I think I am going to stick to Devoe DTM although it takes a long time to dry. Reply:blackbart, Im not much of a painter but I was going to suggest do your painting in RENO. DSW already mentioned something along those lines tho.If I need auto paints; I would check this place INDUSTRIAL FINISHES3865 Mira Loma Dr #102, Reno, NV 89502(775) 329-4274We have a sherwin williams on S Virginia St. Never been there.A place I need to goto today or soon is Reno Paint Mart for a dipstick or stinger (term?) for my new to me GRACO. I use it for acoustic (popcorn) removal and plan to us it for prep coat. No painting for me 201 E Moana Ln, Reno, NV 89502renopaintmart.com(775) 826-2900BTW, I think RPM has a store in Truckee. I dont know for sure but you may be able to have DTM sent there and save an hour drive but then, thats California. And like metalman said," it may cause birth defects in CA. Reply:Thinking Reno will be changing their laws in a couple years, I tried the local DTM Devoe again, but added a hardner as it is an extremely slow drying paint.  So far it looks durable, time will tell.  For houseboats and higher quality projects, I use Rustoleum 9800 urethane mastic which is still available in Ca, but pricey. It seems to be equal to powder coat in my opinion, but close to $200 a mixed gallon.
