Ive posted a couple of things on here about jobs and have heard about alot of positions i never saw when looking around on the internet. What are some jobs that yall have had and what process were you required to use? Ive also been freakin myself out a bit about suckin at TIG, but ive become pretty proficient at arc. Ive done some mig before but am about to take a class on it, and aint real worried. hows the real world like and how many processes have you had to do.thanks yall,Taylor b.
Reply:The only process I have not used in my career is submerged arc. Knowing how to weld is only a small part of a welding job. reading prints, metallurgy , engineering, preperation for welding , mechanical aptitude, common sense are as important as knowing how to weld.  It is a very broad field . Good jobs in any field are not found in want ads.Welders are used in almost every industry there is either in production or maintenance.
Reply:I work in a pipe fabrication shop, we use TIG, MIG, DualShield and sub arc. We don't use stick at all. Everything 2 inch and below is all TIG. We do MIG root and DS on 3 inch up to about 10 inch, then fill and cap with sub arc after that on everything that can be rolled out.
Reply:how long did it take you to get TIG down? ive been at it for 6 days and am gettin nowhere
Reply:good jobs are not found in want ads? Is it a networking type thing? I worked at high end restaraunts and thats how we always hired; word of mouth. somethin like that?

Reply:I hire kids right out of college (or in college). I pay $12-$13/hr and it gets them some experience and something on their resume. I'm not looking for career welders, just someone who can read a tape. Most other jobs require several years of experience before they'll even look at you.  99% of all the welding done here is MIG, and it doesn't need to look pretty because it gets ground down anyway (furniture applications), and it's all thin wall tubing (14ga - 11ga). They get experience with all the basic fabrication equipment (cold saw, shear, ironworker, brake, etc). Every now and then when something a little more custom comes in, I might let one of them try something else, such as pulsed spray transfer, or using a roll bender, etc. Though I refuse to let any of them use the mill or lathe, so I'm stuck doing all the machining.John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
