Here's a quick video / walk around of my light duty rack I just (almost) finished up for my 89 Yota 4x4. 1x2x.095 wall tubing, 1.5x1.5x 1/4 angle for the feet. Some mig, some tig. Reply:Thanks Mike, Mr Hall. Robert, I'll make you a rack. Buy me the truck, I'll build it, then drive the rack to ya!-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:Slick. Looks like it would do you a good job moving your materials.
Reply:Nice job.I was thinking along the same lines so I can haul 20 & 24 foot steel. I suggest an angled member at each leg to keep it from pushing the sides of your truck bed outward. I have a 2000 Silverado and the place where the sides meet the front of the bed are cracked a little.I think when I build mine I am going to make it mount to the floor of the bed so I don't have to worry about it.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Originally Posted by GravelThanks, guys. That's good advice. Uses less material too.I'm going to make it somewhat modular so I can hang it on the fence in the back yard when I'm not using it. Can't use the parking garage at work with it on my truck.

Reply:Originally Posted by GravelI like that! But, it won't fit through my gate without putting it on its side and even then it would take up too much of my tiny little back yard... I think mine will have to be disassemble-able. <new word
Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeCould you make it retractable with tubing and pins? That sounds like a royal pain in the buttocks. I mean retractable up down and also lengthwise, like make it fit your bed, and be able to adjust higher, and when higher than the cab, come out further in front?

Reply:Good tips in this thread. I'll put a tenths indicator on the inside rails when its loaded, to check for deflection. Haha. My last rack bolted to the bed rails, as well as the bed. Took up a bit too much space, but I'm sure it was better for the load. Most I had on that rack was around 300 lbs. Here's a vid of me taking the truck to get that load - Later guys!-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauPfffft, just build a wider gate. Then go get some more yard to have room to put it in. Just find a yard sale somewhere close and tell them you came to buy the yard(or just some of it), problem solved. Look in the local classifieds for yard sales, there are some to be found most every weekend. Maybe go to a garage sale and get a garage, too. |
