So this is my first welding project. First MIG project. 18 years old, and I love welding. Looking to make more of these! It's a fire pit out of a propane tank. Let me know how it looks thanks! Before and after. Attached ImagesLife is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. -Confucius

Reply:I like the look of that.   You get extra style points for the way you did the feet.

Reply:Looks good!
Reply:Your parents will really like the firepit.   Well thought out.  Congrats.
Reply:Looks good! You have a cnc plasma?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:You couldn't get them a gift certificate for Home Depot or Lowes?  I mean,.its something and i am sure they will be surprised.

Reply:Looks like you have a good start on the fire pit! Ever thought about adding a removable cooking grate ( expanded metal) so after you give it to your parents your dad can throw a t-bone on there for the good son that you are!  Hey, you never know.

Reply:What plans do you have for the rest of the tank you cut this end off of?
Reply:Looks good. But I have one concern. Is the bottom open? It looks like you cut a big hole in the bottom then welded it to some risers. If that's the case your fire will burn very hot and fast.  The air will get pulled in the bottom like a billow blowing in there. But nothing wrong with a good hot fire I suppose.Keep up the good work.

Reply:As a parent I couldn't agree more, "Built with your own hands is always a better gift". I buy what I need when I have to but.... I couldn't buy what you're fabricating. Your parents will absolutely love it. Promise!!!!--The little Texas stars for the legs personalize the piece. That was a really clever addition. --I dunno if you have access to any expanded metal scrap but…. a small piece of that should work for a grate well enough.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I have built many fire pits. Your first one is a little crude from a professional standpoint, but looks decent. Works on better cuts around the outside, then improve your air intake/cleanout, and add a log grate. The legs could be improved style wise, try flat plate cut out on your cnc. A finished edge around the top would improve the look as well.  I will caution you that fire pits do not sell well. If your are thinking of making them to sell, there is no competing with the big box stores on them. To make a nice one, you would need to sell it for 400-600$ in order to make a good wage, and that is a hard sell.
Reply:Here's the bottom view of a fire pit I cobbled together out of a center-less rim I got my hands on and some scrap that was laying around.   I've got the bottom 6" of a 55 gallon drum that slides under it for an "ash pan".   When it comes to using expanded metal for a "grate" you've got to get some really heavy stuff or it just burns up quickly.
Reply:When it comes to a fire pit that will burn hot and fast (and go thru a large quantity of wood in short order) this is it.   I don't recommend this design for a general purpose fire pit.   It was built for a special purpose test of seeing how far (and to what temperatures) we could get heat to soak down into a bored hole that was back filled with play sand.
Reply:I will agree with everyone else.Your parents will love it.  Looks good to me, but then I didn't go looking for things to critique on.That said sounds like you have some good ideas to add to this, or improve on the next one.  Just remember as bad as someone can sound critiquing, everything you have gotten is good.  As a side note I recall making my grandmother a small shelf, small piece of plywood for the back, some 2"x4" for the sides and can't remember what for the shelves in the middle.  Little blue paint.  It turned out pretty crooked.  But for a 4 or 5 year old who wanted to do it himself it was alright.  That was about 27 years ago.  She still has it, it's not shoved in a closet or the basement.  It's right out in the open with stuff on it.Your parents will love it even if it's not perfect.  Keep going with what your doing.I will add if you are able to google fire pits, pretty sure some made here, or maybe on miller projects, etc...  You can make them look real nice with some tile or even stone around the fire.I will add one bit, make sure your "table top" is wide enough to get away from most of the heat from the fire or it will be decoration only.Eastwood 135 mig welderHobart Stickmate LX 235 AC / 160 DCHobart EX Tig 165
Reply:Great job!If you make the drink holders so they hang below the pit, it'll allow the beer to stay cold longer.  Don't forget to make a poker and/or tongs - rebar is nice and cheap for the stock.

Reply:Outstanding!!  That's a nice clean design with some  meaningful aspects (NY and TX).  One of the things I've heard about design is to simplify and remove things until you accomplish your objective with the least amount of doo dads.  You have a real knack.

Reply:You did great !        Anything handmade and and passed on as a gift is awesome. You cannot buy the same as a handmade item no matter how simple or what it is. It's all the time invested to build or create it that counts. The first is a prototype , you improve on each project. Ma and pa will love it ! Make sure you give them some wood too !  As for the drink holders, make them free standin or stick in ground. Maybe a small tray table for snacks .
Reply:Nice work!! I wish all 18 Y/O would get off the couch and go build something. Double bonus points on design. Look forward to seeing pictures of your future projects.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkQualified & experienced at welding scrap metal
