Absolutely nothing to do with the moderators on this site.   Glulam support bracket modifications.Modifying some 3/16" glulam hangers for an attached carport. Local supplier did not carry what I needed, special ordering them would complicate a project already behind schedule and over budget. Decided to modify what they had to make it workable. Part 1, the outer corners. Outer (main) glulam beam butted to the two lateral beams, over a 6" post on a concrete base. The "special order" fitting was similar, but I feel this one is more robust. Cleaned, beveled. Backside showed good penetration, better than the OEM welds which did NOT achieve 100% penetration. Main beam also has a central support post, so my modified end supports are not the only weight-bearing components. MM185 maxed out, tap 6, wire speed 90, 030 wire, C25.  Stock piecesCut, cleaned, beveled1F beadBackside of 1G (front not shown here)FinalHobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?
Reply:Part 2, attaching to house. Both lateral beams will be on 6" posts, over a concrete base. Posts will be bolted to wall, providing lateral support and preventing it from pulling away from the house due to snow load. Would have been adequate to handle a 100-year snowfall.  However, in keeping with my "overkill" theme, decided to add a backplate to the beam support, allowing both the posts and the fitting to be bolted to the house.1/8" Eutectrode 6666, approx 115 amps RP, Idealarc 250.   Cut, fit1F1G1G backsidefinalLast edited by FORTEALLOY; 12-18-2014 at 09:53 PM.Reason: pics didnt showHobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?
Reply:Part 3.2nd pass on the backplate, Eutectrode at slightly reduced amps. Havent used this rod in many years, nice stuff. Some minor porosity on the 1G section, visible in Part 2. Shortened the arc length slightly (ie-buried it...) and the pits went away. The slag has the appearance & texture of black glass, easily removed. Dont hear much about this rod in the USA, apparently its popular elsewhere in the world.Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?
Reply:Interesting. If I am understanding things right, how do you secure the post bracket to the post properly with one side of the lower strap blocked by the back plate? Do you secure it to the post thru the back 1st then place the post in position?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
