I’ve been wanting to get a lathe and mill for a very long time. I learned about these machines from my neighbor four years ago. These belonged to his sister-in-law’s late husband who passed away almost 20 years ago. A sad story really, he bought these units new in the late 80’s and only used them a little more than a year before passing from a heart attack. The machines have sat all this time under covers and lightly oiled every couple years by her father to keep them from rusting. I tried to buy the machines 4 years ago but she was still sentimentally attached to them. She’s now moving so I got a call out of the blue asking if I was still interested in them. The machines are in “like new” condition without any wear at all. I gave her $2,500 for the machines and everything pictured below. I know Jet is not the favorite of a “true machinist” but I’m just a hobbyist and I believe the price for everything was a good deal. Here’s a list of all the stuff. I could use help identifying what some of the pieces are used for :Jet 8x40 3 phase 1hp knee mill with phase converter to power itJet 13x40 1 phase 2hp latheThe lathe stand is amazing, ¼ plate on the outer areas, 1/8” plate in the center and 5/8” plate on the horizontals where the lathe bolts down. Reply:You are in Leesburg and I'm in Richmond.  Although we are close, we do have places down here to dispose of such toxic things as mills and lathes that aren't acceptable up there in the D.C. area.  In fact, we have a program here right now where we will give you $2,500. for a mill and a lathe and sundry accessories and will even come pick it up."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I need to get ready for work tonight, but I'll head back here tomorrow to tell you what all you have. To start, the two wooden boxes contain a small and large boring head for the mill...may even be boring/facing heads, The red, probably Starrett, box contains depth gage rods for the depth gauge in the shot with the dial indicators...T-shaped tool with micrometer end to it. Last shot is of a steady rest and a lever operated collet closer to mount to the left side of the headstock of your lathe. You have a set of ER collet holders, R-8 collets and, if momory serves, some 5C collets...don't hold me to the 5C collets, but the collet closer in the last shot probably means my memory is correct.Do yourself a favor and either try to find a machine shop course at your local community college or pick up a few machine shop course textbooks off eBay or any good used book source. I'll hunt up some titles for you and get you going. As far as the lathe goes, try for a Lindsey publication copy of the old South Bend lathe manual "How to Run a Lathe"...the money will be well spent. More later.Last edited by WyoRoy; 07-22-2012 at 09:23 PM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:The level is a Starrett no.98 that is used to level equipment such as your lathe and mill. The round rods with the points are transfer punches. You got a SWEET deal.Congrats.Now hurry and go buy a lottery ticket you lucky dog.
Reply:Did you kiss her when it was all over?Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.

Reply:Photos, starting below the machine shots of respectfully maintained lathe and mill, 1. Gray case ER style collets for the mill...don't see the chuck for them that should go with the collets. R-8 milling macine collets or possibly R-8 end mill holders...or a mix and match in the cardboard boxes.2. Most of a set of milling table clamps3. Two wooden boxed boring heads...looked to be of good older Asian quality. Various center and edge finders. Two R-8 mounted milling machine drill chucks.4. Vises.5. Various dial indicators, dial test indicators, Starrett mag base and a depth gauge...T-shaped tool with a micrometer end.6. micrometer set. Top micrometer is...I believe...a tubing micrometer.7. Machinist level. Starrett...maybe...spring loaded bore gages...insert, tighten, take out and measure with a micrometer.8. End mills and boring bars. Looks like maybe a small facing head with maybe indexable carbide inserts on the top row left.9. Hole gauges,..spotters. In use, insert into hole of the proper size and strike with a mallet to 'mark' location of the hole on whatever your heart has a mind to on the back side.10. Tap & Die set. Craftsman...looks to have been sourced by Sears from Hanson.11. Files, Hook spanners for lathe chuck mounting (?) or wherever. Possible soft blow hammer...maybe brass headed (?). Pair of yellow milling table clamps.12. Metal hardness tester...my guess anyway.13. Starrett cased depth gauge rods to vary the depth range of that T-shaped gauge listed with the indicators.14 Periscope prism. Your guess is as good as mine, but possibly used by the old guy that had the equipment before you on the lathe to check things out without having to contort himself too much.15. Wiggler set missing the indicator holder attachemnt.16. Collant of various types, way oil, cutting oil (?) red grease or anti-seize and whatever else is either marked on the cans, tubes, etc.17. 4-jaw lathe chuck. Wrapped lathe faceplate. Possible lathe tailstock locking plate (?)18. Lathe steady rest. Saw the follow rest installed on the lathe as well. Lever actuated collet closer...depending on your lathe's bore, probably for 5C collets of which I didn't see any. As far as machine shop books...here goes."Audel's Machine Shop set"...so so, typical Audel's presentation. If you get them quite cheap might be worth it."Machinery's Handbook". The one and only original that is updated almost yearly. Find a copy as new as your pocketbook allows...anything from the mid '5os up should work. Enco usually has them on sale new for around $70. Grow into it...you will in time. Provides valuable information on nearly every facet of machine tool operation...formulas, feed rates, metal properties and such."Machine Shop Operation and Set Up"- Lascoe & Porter. Very well illustrated and explained machine shop textbook from either high school or advanced machine tool course. "Machine Shop tables & Shop Practice"- Van Dervoort & Humphrey. Ditto from above. A favorite of mine, but to each there own."Machine Shop Practice" Moltrecht. Well regarded. a bit basic, but right now that isn't a bad thing..."Machine Tool Operation" Axelrod. Another excellent shop course textbook"Tool & Manufacturing Engineer's Handbook". Great companion text to Machinery's Handbook. What one doesn't cover, the other will.Otherwise, any school textbook on machining will aid in your understanding of the basics. None will give you as good an education as actual 'hands-on' work or a machine shop course, but if they are the only available options to you...they'll get the job done.Check out the extensive listings from Lindsay Publishing http://www.lindsaybks.com/ Good, cheap sources of information on old machine tool work and machines...just what you have.Best of luck and keep that pile of underpriced machine tool equipment in good shape!EDIT: I'm not familiar enough with your milling machine, but that may have the ER collet chuck installed on it...Last edited by WyoRoy; 07-23-2012 at 01:42 AM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:don't kid yourself, these older taiwan units are NOT the same as cheap junk that comes from china. that's an awesome mill and an awesome lathe, don't think of them as anything less than that... and yeah, probably worth twice what you paid, best of luck with them miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:Thanks for all the useful information! I guess that Starret level is quintessential when I set the machines onto  their final spot in the shop. I do have a good bit of reading and education to get through before trying to do anything on these machines. I took a metal working shop class and operated a lathe a couple times, but that was in 1982 so I don't remember much Here's a few more pics showing a close up of the chuck that's currently in the mill, the smaller "boring head" from the wooden box, the black "collet closer" and all the literature that came in the "lot". Is that a Boring head and what does a collet closer do? Attached Images
Reply:Here's the literature. Even includes some of the previously mentioned reading material  Attached Images
Reply:Looks like a nicer older Enco boring head. Higher up on the scale than the typical boring head offered at lower pricing nowadays. Knurling at the top is typical for a boring/facing head, but I don't believe that is what you have. The collet closer, and the short cylindrical collet nosepiece in the shot with the 4-jaw chuck and faceplate, allow you to run rod, sections of round, square and hex...with the appropriate collets...in you lathe with greater ease than if you were chucking them up in either your 4-jaw or 3-jaw chucks. Below are a couple of quick photos off of Google Images of a lathe with the collet closer attached. You'll need to install the collet nosepiece in the working end of your spindle taper and the collet closer on the other end of your lathe's headstock.Appears you have both the South Bend "How to Run a Lathe" manual and, I believe, the sheldon or Atlas version. Time to start reading!Youtube can be your friend...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=Dte4uoht9k8Handwheel style collet closer, but same thing more or less...That is the ER style collet holder installed on the quill of your mill, BTW.Last edited by WyoRoy; 07-23-2012 at 11:18 AM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
