I have this sad collection of legs for a welding table I'm building. Two of the legs, to the back left in the picture, are nice enough 3 inch square pieces that just need their ends evened up.The other two legs, which also need their ends evened up, were mistakenly grabbed from the scrap yard assuming the steel was more or less uniformly square.  But it isn't, it's tapered, something I didn't notice until after I cut it.For tools at my disposal I have - 14" HF chop saw- 4.5" angle grinder with grinding & cutting wheels- Sawzall with bimetal blades- Simple metal fileThe legs are all within about 1/2 inch of the desired height.I have no training in these things.  I'm trying to figure outhow to get both ends both level and the same height for thethe set.1) What advice do you have on how to achieve the uniform and level leg sizes?  2) Should I toss the tapered tubes (the two pictured with yellow dots)? Or will they be passable when I try to welled my angle iron struts to them? What is the tapered steel normally used for? (I would guess building beams, but why tapered?)I only took that piece because I was out of options at the scrap yard after weeks of looking.  Thanks for advice to the mechanically challenged. Reply:Cutting to length without a table to set stops will be a tough deal..What you can do is get them as close as you can by cutting/grinding and then make some plates to go over the ends with a hole in the middle and a nut welded on the inside of the plates so you can install adjustable table leveling feet..http://www.arrowindproducts.com/parts_list.asp?CAT_ID=1That is what I would do in your shoes. And what do you mean by "Tapered"..The ends look to be cut not square..They tubes themselves look square to me..Just beat up a bit....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:With only a half inch to spare, I'd work on getting one end square before cutting to length. Use your grinder and a reliable square to get one end square. Then, if you don't know how well your chop saw cuts, you should do a test cut on your longest piece, to test how square it cuts and determine how much will be removed when you grind it square.Adjustable feet are a good idea. One, they will give you an extra inch or two in the length. Two, they are handy if your floor isn't perfectly flat. Three, they are not affected by not-so-square cuts.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Depending on the size, weight and intended use of the table, those might be a bit on the light side for legs. I can't be sure from the picture, but they appear thinner then I'd want. Steel pipe would be thicker, by being round would be sturdier wrt side forces, and is often available free from demolition jobs or as leftover pieces on new commercial construction, if you find the right person to ask.
Reply:Use a speed square to draw a square line around one end, use angle grinder and flap wheel and grind down to the line. Measure desired distance and draw a line around end using a square. Cut using your chop saw, use a flap wheel to square up  by sanding down to the line. repeat three more times.
Reply:Build your table then just wad up a bunch of napkins and stuff them under the legs that need it to stop it from wobbling!
Reply:what zapster said, anyway do you thing that the floor will be leveled?
