I am going to a small town farm auction tomorrow morning for one of my dad's team roping buddies who passed away.  He took great care of his tools and I noticed one of the items is a Hypertherm Powermax 600 model.  Apparently it was a great selling unit for them but I have no idea what a good deal is.  Input please.
Reply:No ideas what one would go for second hand, do a search of ebay etc see what they, or similar speced units are going for. (What they sold for,m not what people are asking for them!)Like most auctions its worth what someone wants to pay for it on the day. What it is worth to you is the knowledge it is probably a good unit, then you factor in  - do you need a welder of that size etc. eg If you already have a good welder it is not worth much to you, it will only be a spare at the right price.

Reply:Always wanted a PM600 - and would still like one today - but they routinely went for or seller was asking more than my budget would allow.  Usually hovering around $1K but they're a bit older now and my guess would be $500-$700 would be a really good price today.Jim Colt will tell you they were the supreme plasma cutter of its time and could give you a better idea what a good used price is but knowing what I know of them the above would be my top of the range.Good luck tomorrow!MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Originally Posted by WNY_TomB.some people do not like being out bid. they will pay more than a item is worth cause they want to win the auction. i went to a auction with my father once and he was holding my arm down to stop me from biding once the price reach the reasonable value level. many people should not go to a auction alone. they cannot help themselves and will over pay for everything
Reply:The Powermax600's usually go for $600 to $1200 if they are in good condition. There are over 60,000 in the field, so show up fairly often for sale.Jim Colt

Reply:Originally Posted by duaneb55Sorry to hear that and I'm not surprised as to what you witnessed.  That's why I haven't been to an auction in over 15 years.  Got tired of wasting a whole day only to watch idiots pay close to or more than new price for used stuff.
Reply:Don't you love the ghost bidders or the owners bidding against you for a "buy back"?  You end up bidding yourself up against no one.  If you go to enough of them, you quickly learn when that is happening, but it is sometimes worth it to play along if the price is right for a few bids, then turn 180 degrees and walk away when it is the next bid above what you want to pay.  They'll drop the hammer, and you'll own it for what you wanted.  I've won a few that way.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
