Welding A Knife???

I have someone interested in having a meat/butcher knife thaf he wants welded.  Somehow the knife got  broke . I know that welding will change the temper.  I am not knowledged in steel tempering.What am I up against here?
Reply:Knives cover such a vast array of materials and build techniques, it's tough to answer that question.Older knives are usually the same medium to high carbon steel through out. They get quenched to give the edge a hardness, then tempered to reduce the brittleness and gain flexibility. There's a whole science behind just temper and quenching and it changes based on the base materials used.Newer knives might bet a combination of materials, much like a bimetal saw blade. A much harder steel near the edge and a softer more flexible steel as a backing. Again the heat treatment process will be key.You may want to post picts and ask questions on a couple of blade forums to do this right, My guess is after you do the repair, you'll need to requench and temper the blade. To do this I'd look for someone experienced with the right tools like a heat treating oven..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Whatever you decide it looks like the guy will have to settle with a tig weld for his broken knife, but the question is, who will tempter and resharpen it for him??May be cheaper to buy a new blade altogether

Reply:i use to weld a nut onto a reamer by standing it in a coffee can full of water with just the tip of the tang showing. maybe an arrangement like that could work?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:This whole thread is probably moot at this point. I repeatedly requested that the customer call me, he never did. A lot of requests from "THUMBTACK" result in people wanting a price on vague info and not wanting to call.
