This has been my winter project, other than tinkering on cars. 1:85 scale model of the 1783 bomb ship La Candelaria. It was a birthday present from my dear wife last year. I'm guessing 800-1000 hrs before it done. Here we go..This is how it all startsgot the deck on, all separate stripsStart of the first layer of plankingmore progressall sanded downto be continuedIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:The second layer of planking ( a lot thinner), African mahogany. Should look great with a coat of finish.Almost finished the second layerfront piece and some "bumper boards"This is where it currently is, keel addedSome of the hundreds of pieces remaining, no to mention the miles of rigging to be tiedWifey is a pretty smart gal, guess where I'll be for the next long time.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Really awesome
Reply:Someone else's completed one. this is what I'm shooting for.crazy amount of detailIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Your attention to detail is exceptional on all your projects Stan. I doubt this one will be any different. I can remember one of my fathers friends who used to do detailed sailing ships like this as a hobby. I was always amazed at his work when ever we would go over for a visit..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:There is no way I would have the patients for that. Especially the rigging. Looks cool tho. Reply:Great looking project - always wanted to attempt a project but dont have the patients. This will be a awesome project your projects have great detail , so i beleive this will as well. Good way to spend extra time in the winter and still be warm.
Reply:What a project. Guess your wife wants to keep you out of her hair for a few years. That looks like it is one heck of a undertaking. What does a kit like that cost ?? Is all the paint and stain furnished with the kit ? Wood has got to be better then metal.I liked the truck and trailer with the MILLER welder you made . This maybe easier .
Reply:Originally Posted by BD1 What does a kit like that cost ?? Is all the paint and stain furnished with the kit ?
Reply:Originally Posted by SWellsThe kit is $400-$500 in the online stores (it was a gift so I don't exactly know what she paid), I did see one cheaper on EBay. No paint, stain or glue included. There is a paint set that has all the specific colors needed for $30ish. Probably 100 hours into it so far, thanks for the comments.
Reply:WOW, that is beautiful. Incredible patience and skill. Really nice I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:BD1, at 1:85 scale that is a BFH! Patience is my middle name when it comes to my projects. Plus, I have the iron eagle supervising me to make sure I don't cut any corners. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Couple of you guys mentioned details, FYI.....the ship full size is around 150' IIRC. Lumber could only be cut 24'-30'. Yup, I cut & etched the planking boards to look like they weren't 150' runs. I've been working on this for a while and never bothered to post it. I'll keep the pics up to date seeing how there seems to be an interest in something a bit different. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Always interesting to see any sort of project form someone as detailed minded as you are Stan. Whether it's ship models, Denny's model aircraft, some of the beautiful wood furniture guys make, leather work several members have posted, or any other craft or hobby, the attention to detail a true craftsman brings is always great to see. Reply:Boy, I hope you have a big bath tub !! Looks neat.
Reply:Love wooden ship models, especially the bigger ones. Looks like you are doing a superb job.Do you have a big magnifying glass, or reading glasses when you work on it?I did a smaller on for my MIL long ago. Fun projects, but they do take a long time to finish.I could envision captain Hook hobbling around the deck, very nice.
Reply:It's starting to cool off so time to get back after this project. Starting to dress up the deck and hull, still a long way's to go. Here's the pics:Rudder's onIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Beautiful work! I'd get a few hours in, realize I have no talent, and torch it while drinking a beer!GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Nice, great cold weather inside project. I hope you got a BIG BATHTUB or HOT TUB !

Reply:A little more work on the hull. Planks for the rigging to attach to, the ship's bell, some railing, steps up the side. Here's the pics:If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Coming along nicely, it is starting to really have detail. Nice work SWells very realistic, love the brass hardware.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems
Reply:Awesome work as always Stan.I didn't see where you may have already answered this but did you have to predrill for the nails to prevent cracking? Did the planking material form to the curves naturally or did you have to steam/soak the material first? My hat is off to you sir. Reply:Stan that is really a very beautiful ship. Impressive with all the skill that you have. Cant wait to see it finished. richey
Reply:Thanks guys. Duane, fortunately no pre-drilling involved. The boards did need to be steamed to get them flexible enough to bend and tapered to fit. First time I'd ever done it and it wasn't too bad, just taken time and patience. It will be a nice addition to my "you have too much time on your hands" collection. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:A little more work done over the past couple of weekends. Some color, the back plate and the whatever they are called for rigging. The gold colored panels will go over the blacked out area in the back....about 2 hours to fit those the way I liked. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Stan the 1st pict of the deadeyes the "eyes " are wrong. 2nd pic they look good. Not sure if you straightened them or not. The way they usually need to be set up for rigging is with the two "eys" on top and the "single "mouth" at the bottom. They look like a"skull" when properly set usually. Check your rigging diagrams to see if it says how they need to be set. I'd hate to have you find out later they needed to be a different way and you found you couldn't easily readjust them. Best to do them right 1st time around..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Have a look at the last pic I posted Doug, I did try to straighten them up using two small picks. Thanks for the "head's up" nothing worst than having to undo work and do it again. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Patience , I'll give you credit. I could not sit still that long. After about a hour I think it would become toothpicks.
Reply:Hi SWells...I'm making the same ship La Candelaria.. but I got a problem...I lost the directions book...with the pics and I can't find it anywhere...can you pls take pictures of the pages and attach those pictures on an e-mail...or here pls...I would appriciatte it man...thank you for your time...and you are doing a very good work on your ship...
Reply:Pretty much impossible to finish this with out instructions. If you want me to email the larger pics PM me your email address, if more detail needed let me know. I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of youre. Here's you go (gonna have to do it in 2 posts, they are in reverse order). If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
